what is the smallest knifefish?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Yeah, african is the most common. There are a few others that stay around that same size (centipede, elegant) but they're much more uncommon.

centipede knives (steatogenys duiadae) get about 8 in incl their hypopo tail (long ones on the males, whip like), you could house a cluster in something like a 75 proabably. A bit more rare is [brachy]hypopomys occidentalis which maxes out at about 6 in including the tail. They're kind of hard to find and have to be wild caught, but they're little and they're cuties. Its important to note that knifefish are incredibly thin so they're not as "big" as some other 6-8 in fish. but its still important to give them their space.

I'd have to agree, African's are the smallest. Plus they don't grow all that quickly, IMO. At least not like a clown :)

Black Ghost will get to be about a 12", however they are slow growers and look really cool!

:WHOA::banhim: LIES!!! Try almost double that.

Agreed. Black Ghost Knifes are slow growers in my mind compared to other fish (IMO), but they do get much larger than a foot if you house them properly.
