What is your favorite CA/SA cichlid and why?

And I found Argentea to be not even close to the aggression that many on this site have said, there are always exceptions. I have kept Breidohri in the past too and really enjoyed them. Beautiful and great personalities albeit a bit on the aggressive side.

I do not have a lot of experience but, currently, these Apistogramma agasizzii. Big personality in small packages.

I have found them to be much more aggressive than advertised commonly. I don’t mean that as a benefit, rather as a surprise.

Another favorite of mine Apistogramma as stated was very surprised at the aggression level of the pair I purchased recently the female Double Orange Flash is not even 2 inches and very territorial lol.

I almost suggested Argentea but remembered you wanted some color, they're actually Maskoheros now. In person they actually are remarkably colorful but it's very subtle, their sheen is unbelievable. I've never ever seen a picture do them any justice.

+1 argentea are stunners. But can be pretty nasty. Mine tore up a del in minutes. It depends on the size of the tank but i love vieja types. Bocourti and pearsei are up there too. Also always wanted to keep loisellei

Just noticed the size of the tank. Might be large enough for zonatus and argentea but i would still be weary. After mine hit 6 inches or so they completely changed. I found zonatus to be slighty less aggressive than argentea but still nasty. I had to move some tanks a round and at the time some of the zo's were 4ish or less inches and i put them in a 150 with the pearsei who at the time was pushing 12ish inches. They attacked him to no end.

300 gals seem big but its really not. I feel like if i added another large male cichlid to my tank the pearsei would still find a way to have a problem with it

duanes duanes would be better to ask about the long term aggression issues with these fish

Yeah, i am trying to stick with something that isn't psychotic and also has personality which i am finding out isn't easy to come by. haha. It seems like the more personality they have the more murderous they are.

but (knock on wood) I have had pretty good luck when it comes to aggression in the past. I've only lost 1 maybe 2 fish to aggression in the 10 years I've been keeping.

Hows the pearsi in terms of personality J jaws7777 . I might look into those or bocourti, they are one of my favorites.

Haitiensis Black Nasty :D i like balck Nasties fin shape and color. One thing for me is the females Cam take on nearly the same fin shape as males and she turns jet black in breeding dress. The males are just beastly!!!!!!!

Why don't you try Malawi Peacocks or Haps? Some of the haps may have a little character, and I see people keeping the gentler haps and peacocks with polies without problems, while the CAs all seem to be dancing bears.
