What is your policy on tipping wait staff?

bad mouth your restaurant

With the interwebs these days, that can really hurt a business. I always read Yelp reviews before checking out a new restaurant. I guess the only good thing is that employers have less tolerance for bad service these days, and are quick to let somebody go for having too many complaints. Waiters are a dime a dozen and easily replaceable, especially in the current times where so many are looking for work.

yeah, i'm pretty sure the owners and parent companies of the chains aren't asking "but did you tip them? how much was your bill? how much did you tip? ok, now proceed with your complaint"

See, that's the ugly side of tipping. It turns servers into vindictive employees. There's no reason to purposely give somebody bad service just because you didn't like their tip, which may I add is completely and totally optional, and should not, in no way shape or form influence the service you provide. I understand we're human and human emotions take over, but it isn't right. That's why service is so crappy in this country to begin with. You shouldn't have to pay somebody to give you good service when you're already paying for the product.

That is all :)

You are worse than the news with that selective quoting...lol Go back and re-read my post.

When I would purposely make sure my tables had dirty dishes on them so the hostess wouldn't seat them in my section, I wasn't providing bad service......

I just wasn't providing service at all. Whatever waitress they got instead of me was the reason they got bad service. As you say, "not my problem".

I wasn't vindictive at all. I didn't want revenge....I just didn't want to work hard for 2 hours for nothing. hahaha! Sorry!

i hate tipping but i do it anyways just because i'm nice. i will tip anywhere from $2-$7 max depending on how much the bill was

i'm not a bad customer, i hardly ever ask for anything so i don't think it's necessary. i hate that some people may get offended if you don't tip them nicely. i don't like feeling obligated to tip anybody. i hardly ever tip at vietnamese restuarants (sorry, i love your food but your service is horrible) and if i do, it's only 2-3 bucks regardless of the bill

but my general feeling is, if you're a waitor/waitress, it's your job, why should you get paid extra? i get that they are paid dirt by the hour but that doesn't matter to me. get another job. but don't give me a dirty look if you see a small tip

I agree with this. Seems restaurants have made it where the customer is now responsible for paying waiter/waitress wages. Back in the day a tip was a courtesy and not obligated. You were alsoo allowed to tip what you wanted. If you wanted to tip $1 or tip $10 that was up to you. Now they try to act like you HAVE to pay a certain percentage. Restaurants have noticed how much in tips waiters/waitresses get and pay them like $2 an hour nowadays. Some places make them all put the tips into a box and then it is split. What pisses me off is when they don't get a good tip they get pissed at the customer. Get pissed at the restaurant. They should seriously make it a law that restaurants can't do this. They need to pay waiter/waitresses regular wages. No one should be obligated to tip high cause the waiter/waitress makes a crappy wage an hour. Maybe they should make food cheaper at restaurants if they want higher tips. The food is overpriced to begin with.

I would really like to agree with you on this one Piscine but I just can't . As a former server myself, I was being paid for a service. A tip was extra! As a bartender, I was usually so busy making drinks that I didn't notice until the end of the night what my tip jar looked like. As a waiter, I provided excellent service no matter what the tip was....you never get a second chance at a first impression. I also take into consideration the economy that we are in that most are struggling right now just to pay their bills. Taking thier family out to eat is a treat, not an everyday thing so a huge tip isn't always in the budget.

I think in this situation you just have to leave it to personal preference. Some people tip, some people don't...bottom line it is optional.

And just to clarify...I still tip as well. :)

The power is in your pocket. If you want tipping to go away, stop eating at restaurants.

As a former food service employee, I learned to remember the bad tippers and make sure the bussers know to leave my tables dirty when they were scheduled to show up. They would always get the noob-servers who didn't know any better. So yes, their service sucked because of their tips. Low & no-tippers do frequent the same places over and over sometimes....Just like regular people do. lmao They often take double the time, require twice the refills, and expect it twice as fast.

You are not entitled a tip. You may think you are because your employer is a tight ass. You know, maybe Waiters/waitresses should strike. Maybe those greedy restaurant owners should pay you a regular wage instead of $2/hr, and making you resentful towards customers who are NOT OBLIGATED to pay your wage. They pay for the overpriced food to begin with. Remember, tipping is a courtesy. If you or anyone does not like these circumstances don't work in the restaurant industry then. If I ever found out some did what you did like left my table or utensils dirty on purpose I would slug them right there in the restaurant.
