What keeps killing my Tetra ?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Interesting observations, but these were still babys, and all but one are gone now, so I don't think it could have been that.

I am thinking of buying a few and larger from another store to see what happens. But it's playing with life.

Currently I am trying to catch the lemons and put them to the remaining silvertips to see if anything happens, but they are a pain to catch as they wake up instantly at night and there is no chance during the day without destroying my tank, so its a slow process.

Ah i see. In that case i would say its most likely conspecific aggression from the other tetras. Starts with nipping tail and anal fins, once the fish shows distress more join in attacking the body. I know of multiple tetras that enthusiasically off each other for seemingly no reason, the lampeyes i mentioned earlier included.

Thanks a lot for that info.

I feel a sad ironie, I originally wanted to move away from larger predatory fish since I got tired of them constantly biting another or just keeping a very limited amount of species, but now they kill each other more than ever :(
I just want some nice schools of fish for my upcomming 3.000l

An Update.

I fished out all Lemon Tetra and put them in a small extra Tank with the remaining silvertips. In that Tank nothing happened.

After a few days I put the silvertips back in the main Tank and they started disappearing again, however just over night, not while the lights were on, tho it still could have happend during the morning dawn. I did not find a halfed one, but that could be just statistics since there were so little left.

I don't know if this can say anything on the lhe lemon tetra or not.

But I will now suspect a pleco, and try to catch them out and see what happens if I put them into an extra tank with silvertips.

The unknown L-cats are propably Panaqolus, which would explain the mess of Woodchips in my filter.

Any ideas which pleco might be likely ? They are a pain to catch, so having some order could help.

You should consider the size of the catfish. If they are larger than you initially estimated, they could have the capability to bite off the smaller fish. Sometimes catfish can surprise us with their feeding abilities.

F FerdosSintol which catfish ? There are multiple species. All plecos are big enough to do it, the silvertips were just about 3 cm

I would put my money on the oxydoras if they're still in there. Try moving those to another tank and I bet your propblems stop.

C Cal Amari how much money did you put ?

I sold them 2 weeks ago due to me getting tired of them constantly shifting all the sand in one corner and never showing up during the day. I added some more rummy noses and some neons and they still keep disappearing.

I have yet to find a halved one tho since I removed the lemon tetra.

  • Haha

It is also not the L14 either.

I put them in an extra tank with a few neons, and while the ones in the main tank keep disappearing at an alarming rate the ones with them did stay.

Next I will try the Panoquolus, then the 333.

Well my bad from your list at the beginning that was the most predatory fish, but i guess a hundred little bites can halve a fish as well. Unless you see the attack happening though it's hard to determine from a piece of whats left, nearly all fish are opportunistic and will nibble on a dead fish floating by

i had something like this in my cardinals (species tank). They disappeared one-one over 10days. No symptoms, just "poof". Seemed to be overnights, but could have been day & night. They'd die & mystery snails would gobble-up, I'm guessing, as I may have found 3 bodies through the event.
It stopped when I added almond leaves (a bunch of 'em), suggesting a bacterial som'm. Three fish remained/remain.

Since removed snails & replaced all bottom with bamboo leaves&hollows, plus almond. Three remaining fish are fat-fat & happy (I think) though no spawning, but that'll be another thread...
