What killed my bichir

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
k He still alive it only happened today Ill try to get better pics I increased the temp and added some apuaruim salt see if it helps. Should i buy some meds like melafix and water test kit or the strips

i would get an api freshwater master test kit. It tests for ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, high and low range pH. Test strips are not always very accurate and you get more testing out of the liquid kits per dollar. Good luck with your bichir.

bacterial infection that looks like it has lead to hemoragic septicimia
you'll need real antibiotics to try and save the fish

:iagree: bacterial infection can spread fast. and yes you'll need antibiotics, but even that is not guaranteed to help given the condition of the fish. but you should give it a try, and act quickly.

ps. forget melafix. it won't do crap at this point.

where can i get the antibiotics and how would i use them on the bichir

Petsmart,Petco, and most local fish/pet stroes should carry somekind of anti biotic just follow the directions on the package-Anne

you can quit the heat and salt its pretty useless unless you're dealing with external parasites

i would use salt. the dosage i usually use is 0.1% (i.e. 1 teaspoon per US gallon). As for melafix, i mean you can use it if you have it right now until you get the antibiotics, if only for your peace of mind. Realistically i don't think it'll have an effect.

what you can also do right now if you have betadine or neosporin or polysporin (yes the antibiotics ointment made for humans) is that you can take the fish out, and apply a liberal amount of any of these to areas of the fish where you see redness/red streaks.

You can get antibiotics at LFS. as a start, try to find either tetracycline or kanamycin. Chances are if the LFS has antibiotics, they should have tetracycline.

you add the antibiotics directly in the water, so use of quarantine tank is recommended, as it'll kill the beneficial bacteria in your filter. dosage for tetracycline is 750 mg/US gallon. In the US, usually each capsule is 250mg (but be sure to check with the vendor), so i use 3 capsules per 10 US gallons of water. i use the same dosage for kanamycin as well.

now if you buy one of the brand name products, then i suppose just follow instruction on the package like Anne said.

of course don't forget to remove any carbon.

SEACHEM NEOPLEX!!!! ASAP

I was battling septicemia for a while, on numerous occasions and this worked every time. Not carried at petco/petsmart though. Need to find it at an independent shop. It comes in a vile-like container. Little pricey but worth it. No harm on the bio-filter. And make sure there is no carbon in the filter(s). Its a powder, added straight to tank.

Salt, mela/pimafix did not work for me.
