If it was gray, I would guess channel, white, or blue catfish. Whites stay the smallest, around 24". Look at the tail next time you see it. Channels and blues have an extremely forked tail, while whites have a more rounded, straighter edged tail.

Look at the differences:
Blue cat

Channel cat

White cat

This is the right idea, but bullheads expecially when small can be light too. Bullheads have rounded tails.
What part of earth are you from?
I think it would be doutfull but if you live in Texas or New Mexico they could be Headwater Catfish. If you live in sothern AZ or NE Mexico it could be Yaqui Catfish.

Most stores sell channel cats, but it could have been anything else I guess.

If it has a forked tail it's either a channel or blue but it's most likely a channel cat. Rounded tail could be any type of bullhead, some kind of madtom (not likely), flathead, or a few others.

You won't see and I. lupus for sale anywhere in Texas. They should be listed (but aren't) since they've been extirpated from most of their historic habitat.

When I worked at the LFS, the "generic" catfish were always channels, even though for aquaria, bullheads are the better choice for the general public. I guess bullhead farms just aren't as profitable...

If some of the nicer spotted bullheads would get on the market the channel cat would get kicked out of the hobby. Spotteds (supposedly) only get 12", max. Madtoms would be better to get in the hobby because they're a nice, small-sized, breedable catfish, which means wild populations won't get over-collected for PetStupid to sell them.
