If some of the nicer spotted bullheads would get on the market the channel cat would get kicked out of the hobby. Spotteds (supposedly) only get 12", max. Madtoms would be better to get in the hobby because they're a nice, small-sized, breedable catfish, which means wild populations won't get over-collected for PetStupid to sell them.

I agree, I have a spotted bullhead that I pulled out of a feeder tank a couple of years ago. He's a great fish, a pig, but his looks rival many of those exotic cats people are so nuts about. Ictalurus lupus are gorgeous and relatively small, too, but are so geographically restricted in the wild I hope the trade never latches on to them (and I doubt it ever would).

well guys i went back again and there was a guy working there he told me they were bullhead cats i purchased two i kept the small one and gave the other one to my friend ill post a pic of him soon

Looking forward to the pics, there are several types of bullhead.

Well, from the curved tail I'm guessing it actually is a bullhead, but impossible to tell species. Body color is no indicator. I have a black bullhead that is brownish some of the time and even shows a lightly mottled pattern periodically but he's definately a black based on all other factors.
You can tell by counting rays on the anal fin so I've heard (don't remember where I found that info though) and by the color of the chin barbels, general body shape, and blacks usually have a distinct white band at the base of the caudal fin.

That said, it's more likely a brown than anything else.

you are right, the pic is crappy, lol!

He posted the same pics on NANFA, so I'll say here what I said there:

From the pic, as there is no contrast to the white underside, I'm guessing the bottom barbel are white, in which my guess would be yellow bullhead.

According to "The Audubon Society Field Guide to North American Fishes, Whales, & Dolphins" book;
Brown Bullhead have 21-24 anal fin rays.
Yellow Bullhead have 24-27 anal fin rays.
Black Bullhead have 17-21 anal fin rays.

When I first ceatch a bullhead I look at its chin barbels, if they are white or yellow its a Yellow Bullhead, if they are dark gray or black I count the anal fin rays and look for the cresent band before the tail (Black Bullhead).
Almost all of the Black Bullheads I caught had 19 rays, maybe 1 in 100 had 18 rays. These are the only Bullheads that live by me.
Your pick is very blurry, but it is not a Spotted Bullhead nor do I think it could be a Snail Bullhead (17-20 anal rays), Flat Bullhead, or any Madtom.

Count the anal rays, and check the color of the barbels.

Mike
