That is an ST, D. pulcher. D.microlepis was a valid name until 1998 as ST and ITs were both thought to be the same fish. D. pulcher was first described in 1998 as a separate species.

I see, thanks for the info :)

Here is a pic of a Dat labled as an IT (Datonioides.microlepis) found on a Jap website with ST tail stripes.

yup, that's a it!!! tail is not the only id key

First big pic on page 1 is an IT. The tail is not the way to ID dats...I always look at the body proportion between height and length. There's no def formula, but I can tell almost 9 out of 10 at a time.

The first pic have a rectangular body shape, while ST usually have a short wide body rectangular shape.

Again, hard to explain, but if you see a lot of them, you can tell easily.

Now, the second small pic, I have to say it's an ST just by looking at the height of the body versus the length, but again at a juvi stage, anything is hard to ID accurately..

How about the dat below? it's found from other forum and said as a ST but with IT tail steipes...:)

Because some ST DOES have IT stripe on the tail, that's why we don't ID dat by just the tail stripes :grinno:
