what kind of feeder fish should my small rbp be given. i've heard that some are bad for them.:headbang2

raise your own, get a 20G tank and 2 convicts. Boom theres the healthy feeders.
otherwise buy them from a store and quarentine them for a month before feeding. I bet worms would work.

regular earthworms?? just drop'em in??:headbang2

Ive raised mine from smaller then a quarter size on Earthworms, bloodworms, beefheart, some live feeders and Cichlid color-enhancing pellets. :)

If you look there is one of the two surviving Zebra Danios I cycled the tank with.

Feeder fish are not that bad for P's. They are scavenger fish in the wild, and they eat sick and dead fish all the time. I just wouldn't make it an evryday thing, but If your P's aren't that big I would get toughies they won't make a mess like that, and they are the least parasitic of all feeders.

Also known as rosey reds, they look like 1" gold fish fry. Thats the best I can explain them.

they are a breed of fathead minnow, a common fish in the midwest. they are much better to feed than goldies, but are still a little high in fat content.

Regarding your feeder fish debate.

There are two ways feeder fish are unhealthy and bad for your piranhas.

Firstly most 'feeders' brought from bait shops and local fish shops are raised in unsatisfactory quarters to keep the price down. These unsatisfactory quarters are rife in diseases and infections within the feeder fish. Which of course get passed onto your piranhas when they feed on the feeders.

The second bad thing about feeders is 'carp like fish'. These include goldfish, koi, minnows etc. Such fish contain a vitamin which can restrict and slow natural growth of piranhas.

I suggest, if you are looking for healthy feeders, breed your own. While if you want to replicate their natural diet, try breeding or purchasing South American fish.

Also, earth worms and bloodworms are great for little piranhas!
