I've owned quite of a few of the bichirs from certain regions and I've seen many pictures of bichirs imported from certain regions. You'll start to see similar characteristics that tell you where they are from. There are little details like headshape, pattern, and finlet count.Honestly I'm always so confused on how ppl can tell what exact region a bichir comes from. Especially when there are several regions that house the exact same specie of bichir. Is there some sort of chart or graph that shows what these different regional varients look like in each region? Like let's say if I had a wild caught Senegal would there be a chart or graph the would show what all the Senegal's in different regions look like? Because I honestly can't tell the difference between a wild caught bichir from one region vs another region. Kind of like with these 2 on the right in OP's last pic here.
Ik they are both laps but I'd have no way of figuring out where either one came from let alone if they are from 2 different regions entirely. They both look the same to me but I'm certainly no expert in this field. If someone could atleast explain it to me I'd really appreciate the extra knowledge.
As most of us already know, bichirs vary alot in shape/size/pattern, so sometimes it can be hard to identify without knowing the true source of the fish. It helps to buy from reputable sellers that know what they are importing because sometimes African exporters will lie about catch location just for sales.
