what kind of pred fish can i put with these??

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
piranhas wont work, they will make a quick snack out of those

Then I guess you didn't see the pics. The tetra is fine with the Pacus; mainly because, as I have discussed with an aquatic biologist friend who knows much more about Piranhas than the both of us put together, the Pacu Piranha is one of the largest species in the Genus containing the common Tetra. So it is like a cousin to the Tetra (note the similar geometries and fin characteristics). Also, you should look at the last few messages before jumping into a thread.

pacus, yes, piranhas-no. search it on youtube, i dont need to justify what i said to you. theres a vid of a school of rbps eating a pacu so i dont think that just because they are in the same family would prevent them from eating eachother

Those are black skirt tetras. No pradators will work.

so wait u got 2 pacus in a 36? The oscar? I know u said u had a 250 just put the pacus oscar tex in there and let Jt wife fill up the 36 with the community fish problem solved it both happy and so are the tetras

"the pacu piranha" ??????????

They are 2 different fish.

red belly pacu = Piaractus brachypomum = will probably eat your tetras when they grow bigger.

red belly piranha = pygocentrus natteri =will kill/eat your tetras for sure no matter what size they are.

One way of telling which is which is to look at the jaw structure. The Red Belly Piranha has an under bite while the Pacu does not. Google the pics and you will see the difference.

Well it's been 5 months almost, and my tetra is surviving with 2 Large Pacus and a Tiger Oscar. I had a Xenotodon, but he had a stroke or something and got eaten. So here are some pics of the new tank.

This Tiger Oscar is about 3 inches

This is a 36 Gal Aqueon, I added a double filter and pumphead.

This is Rambo, the baddest survival tetra in the world.

The Pacus are about as big as my hand, and will eat anything in the tank (including rodents) but the Tetra and the Oscar.

Overstocked much?????????

I've read every post in this thread, and it seems to me that you are doing absolutely NO research for ANY of the fish that were purchased. You mixed an african cichlid with two south american cichlids, and also threw two red belly pacus into the mix (which will grow to massive size), on top of the little tetras your wife picked out. You stated you have a 250 (or something large like that) but none of these large predatory fish (oscar, green terror, or pacus) are being housed in it? Sounds to me like you're asking for advice that you have no intention of following. :swear:

And as far as your "aquatic biologist" friend, he can't be doing very well in his 'field' of study if he told you to put those PACU in a 36 bowfront. Also, PACU are NOT PIRANHA(sp.). Related yes, same no. Your friend needs to go back to school.

One more thing, I'd watch what you say about someone know more about certain fish than someone else on this forum, I don't think you truly understand where you're at. :)
