What kind of rocks in malawi tank??

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Persoanlly I avoid lace rock and lava rock - the bits of food and waste that get stuck in it wont do much to help the BB. In fact it'll only harm the water over time. Theres enough stuff going on in the sand/gravel and filter media you dont need to try and make "live rock". If the tank gets enough natural sunlight that will happen for you and give your africans a treat they'll enjoy and look natural too.

Lava rock! I used to have a breeding colony of T. Moorii that thrived in a tank 1/2 full of lava rock for over 5 years! It had a HOB filter and an UG.

I personally use reef rock since it buffers the ph well and I like the white rock look. Its not to expensive either which is good.

The best sugestion that I could give you about rocks is this, if you have a local rock yard go and pick up a couple pieces that you like and after they have been cleaned put them in some water and let them set for a few day and check the water to see if the parameters have changed.

I on the other hand use pretty much THR because it is very affordable here.

yeah i have red tufa in my 90 gallon and cant wait to get that out! lol.. if i were you, id go to your phonebook and look for local rock and landscaping yards.. thats what i did. i got 200 lbs of round river rock (in greens, grays and pinks) for less than 20 bucks...

its too expensive online (shipping is more than the cost of the rock! lol) and your local hardware stores wont carry what you need..

I have holey rock, round smooth river rocks and slate that I get from my backyard.
I like the way I can stack the slate to make lots of caves.

just got some nice Texas Holey Rock for my new set-up, I love the clean look to it. Here's s blurry pic of it with a black background & white sand set-up:
