What kind of turtle is this?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I just googled a pic to see if thats what it was. The shell looked the same as an adult, but I've never seen a baby that small until your pic. They used to be around here all the time, but now you only occassionally see them if you take a back road when it rains
Oh okay, thought you were a turtle keeper as well haha.I was really surprised to see a terrestrial turtle around here what with all the development and pollution.....oddly I came across an adult box turtle in the nearby park a few years back.It looked like it was moving towards the edge of the park and towards the street.

Baby box turtle, they used to be really common, now they are pretty rare due to increasing population and road traffic, if your interested in this species get some captive bred ones, they do great in outdoor pens

Yeah,I have considered ordering some captive breds in the past. I really would rather go that route as opposed to collecting from the wild.

Tempting but no.I placed it farther away from the road.
Man your a better man than me I don’t know if I’d be able to resist something this cute

I was only able to because I have had quite a few turtles in the past and I am nit really set to properly take one on right now.
I want to try keeping some species of tortoise in the not too far future.

I’ve kept a sulcata before they are cool, they get massive but it’ll take years and years. Easy to keep alive as well

Build a outdoor pen, use a fence or wall they can't climb as they are good climbers.

If you get a box turtle some of their favorite foods include strawberries, crickets, earthworms and other insects.

In time they recognize you and become very trusting.

You can add a pond to their enclosure, just make sure they can easily crawl out, if you wish you can stock the pond with frogs or fish.

Various snakes can also be kept with box turtles, just don't add anything less than 12 inches or it might be mistaken for a worm.

Many plants can get trampled in the enclosure so use plants tall enough to not get trampled.

That species is what I will go after or perhaps a cherry head red foot.

I will construct some type of pen when I get ready to keep one.
