What level do bichirs feed on?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Alright, thanks everyone. I am just worried because I got mine a few days ago, but he seems to like this hbh super soft pellet.

Its just strange because he swims arond all the time, very active little fellow, and he is always near the top but he doesn;t go for any floating food, it look slike he is just gulping air, but then today i tossed some pellets close to his face and he grabbed one, so we are making progress.

It is a senegal bichir, but I got the biggest fattest one becasue they said they never feed them frozen they just eat flakes, so I figured if it was big and fat and healthy looking from just flake food then it should be easy to get it to eat.

Would it do better with another on with it though? I don't know if its a solitary fish or a social one because at petsmart they all huddle together at the top on the giant fake plant, and mine seems really really active (not that I am complaining) and I just don't know if thats normal for it.

nothing would go wrong if you keep them in groups:thumbsup:, myself have four sens in a 90g tank and yup they eat at all levels it all depends on the fish,
some eat at the top some eat at the bottom

Depends on the individual IME.

My endlis were trained on hikari gold and bio gold when they were 3", and now that the big one is around 12", it still takes floating pellets, and seems to prefer them over massivore.

The young sen I have was introduced after I started feeding massivore exclusively, but still learned to snatch some of the hikari gold when it gets a chance.

my bichirs mostly eat from the bottom.
i dont find them shy eaters.
just greedy and happy eaters. :D
my endlis and sens will eat from the top if they are very hungry.

I have a lot of bichir in 75 gallon community tank. When I bought them I never thought that they will become so big. Below is the list of bichirs that I have:
1) >10 common bichir (4-7 inch)
2) 3 albino common bichir (4-6 inch)
3) 1 high fin common bichir (5 inch)
4) 1 armored bichir (6 inch)
5) 3 ornate bichir (7-9 inch)

Eating habits:
- Eat on the bottom, they find food using smells
- Rarely eat on top, difficult for them to grip the food (floating pellet, meal worm, etc)

Food:
- Meal worm, make sure you gut loaded your meal worm to make them easier to sink (meal worm make your bichir grow bigger faster)
- Live feeder fish
- Sinking pellet
- Market fish, chopped into small piece
- Prawn, chopped into small piece
- Minced beef
- Chicken, chopped into small piece
- Dried anchovies, chopped into small piece
(For market fish, prawn, beef & chicken, wash it with water after chopping it into small pieces to avoid cloudy water)

getting them used to the food you provide will affect their feeding habits when they grow up hehehe
I tried to give them variety of food and a well balance diet to them. Different food have different nutrient. My bichirs is not picky eater. They are not choosy and eat everything. That's why I dare to give them variety of foods. However, I don't dare giving variety foods to my other fishes. They might choose their favourite food and will eat that type of food only.
