What makes a leopoldi a black diamond variant?

So, are Black Diamonds genetically proven? Will two BD parents consistently throw BD offspring? Or is it possibly a geographical trait that can be selectively bred?

Spreaking of markings...both my Leos have spotted undersides (pretty much like what is shown on the first page of this thread) and my female has been consistently getting darker and growing a ring of spots around her disk as she's grown. She was completely "normal" if even ugly (if a Leo can be called ugly) when I got her almost 5 years ago.
