Because alot of people dont have hobbies. They'll just come home from school or work and park their butts in front of the idiot box. Your not alone...

Fantastic reply!!! I totally agree!!

luckily my parents are pretty supportive and even brag about what I do with my fish via breeding projects and things. My college buddies love the fish and love to come see them. Plus i havent had a girl yet that didnt think my 120g wide planted angelfish tank wasnt sexy as hell.

I'm one of the lucky ones as well, girlfriend loves fish, in fact shes even started helping clean my tanks out from time to time... my Dad's kept fish as long as i can remember until he recently gave up the hobby due to retirement...

Even some of my friends are into fish which in a way makes it all the more interesting, especially when it comes time to go shopping for new stuff...

I have one word for everyone here -- Aquaponics.
Aquaponics is just basically a vegetable growing filter on a fish tank/pond.

I've kept fish since I was 12 years old and I've heard all the same remarks that you all have. But in the past few years I've gotten into Aquaponics and what I learned from keeping fish has been priceless. Without it I would never have gotten into Aquaponics. I'm already growing my own fruit and vegetables (and saving money) and soon I'll be selling Aquaponic units and starting a large scale aquaponics farm. Once people hear that your 'little' hobby might actually make you money they usually don't bug you anymore. They just start asking how they can build a system themselves.

Yep I get that all the time! My best friend teases me all the time about it, everytime me and him are in my room he goes over to my piranhas and takes the dry erase marker I use on the tank to keep track the growth rate of my fish and writes "*** FISH" right on the front of my tank ): he is always comparing his Cockatoo and tortus to my piranhas and saying they are better. Yeah his bird can bite and take off a finger, but she yells all the damn time! His tortus is so boring but he claims it's better than my fish because you can take it out and watch it walk around.... wow so exciting! Compared to feeding time in my piranha tank NOTHING can hold a candle to how cool they are!:headbang2

Hi,yes when people dont have the same intrests or hobbys, not for this does it give them rights to criticize others or say nasty things to us!

My wife is supportive of the hobby and enjoys the fish.
I never mention fish in mixed company unless someone else brings it up.Its not a popular hobby in these parts.People mostly keep animals they are going to eat around here.

My parents didn't allow for any animals in the house except fish (10 gallon, gold fish). I always wanted to be a marine biologist and loved anything doing with water when I was a kid so my parents understand but think its a waste of money. My wife loves the fish as she is a animal lover as well. She feeds them when I'm out of town and I catch her chillin in front of the tank sometimes looking very peacfull, but she doesnt like it when i obssese over somethings. My friends look at them as more of a status thing, like some sort of ganster/scarface luxury, and dont realy see the beauty of these creatures.

My favorite comments are " they are that smart, they know when their going to be fed?" or "Those are freshwater but they are so colorful?"

Either way I am a lifer, the possiblities are endless and I wouldn't have it any other way!

It a hobby, people just don't understand. This kid I work with loves cars, I don't understand why he spends all his money on parts, but its the same passion I have with fish keeping.

Not a single person in my life understands my love of fishkeeping. not my wife, not my parents, not my friends... its isolating to say the least, and makes it difficult.

No one sees it as a valid hobby or why I "waste my time" doing it.

it truely is a piss-off for me.

dont worry we understand you. ;)
