I was just going through some posts and saw ALOT of threads about umbees and festae. I know that they have been around for quite a while in the hobby but what is it that made them get extremely popular. Honestly that's really about 75% of the threads you see in here. ( just to be clear I'm not knockin the fish at all I am just curious what took so long for them to become popular)

I think with both fish it comes down to their coloration, especially the festae. The umbee have that outgoing personality appeal as well.

IMO as for umbees, I don't know that the trend is in having one, so much as it is in having a large male or a spawning pair. Many keepers of aggressive fish tend to have them for short periods of time before rehoming them. In the case of Umbees, this is fairly common because people with tanks not suitable for such a large fish purchase them when small with the intent to either upgrade the tank later or rehome the fish.
As for festae (like managuensis), they are one of the first larger, aggressive cichlids that cichlid keepers discover (beyond oscars and red devils). The festae is also unique in coloration and relatively slow growing, allowing people to house them for longer while appreciating the coloration.

For me its availability of the species at the time. Festae weren't around about a year ago. They were nearly impossible to find. Umbees have been spawning and distributed in the community here and with the different locals of the fish, its interesting. Also, nothing other than Oscars red devils and jack dempseys are available in lfs in this area, and the only people interested in the more rare stuff are right here on mfk!

I agree w/ the last two post. It seems everyone wants the biggest, baddest, and most colorful.
You see a lot of post on how to care for the cichlid after people buy them (tank size especially). It should be the other way around. I really want a dovii male, but my 150g would be too small, so I don't own one. I like to keep fish for life if possible. I only get rid of fish if I have aggression problems.

I've been in the hobby for many years. Fish come in and out of vogue all the time. What is popular and hard to come by one year, is common and hard to get rid of in another year. It's the now fish that everyone wants. Colorful fish and fish with personality or interesting behavior are always in demand.

Can't say what it is but this kind of thing happens every few years. Part of it might be increase in availability, part of it might be people see other member with nice specimens and want to but them. I remember like a year ago every other thread was about dovii for months on end. Not that I don't like dovii but that is all you saw. Where are those people now? I remember cubans were popular for some time, I jumped on that bandwagon. I think the above comments are right. People just want the biggest and baddest fish but few have the space to care for these monsters in the long run. You rarely see threads about the little guys or "passive" fish.

I agree w/ what everyone is saying in this thread. This isn't just cichlids, but other fish too.
There are so many tanks on here that have the same stock-pbass, rays, dats and arrows. You see so many of them it gets almost boring. They are super trendy.
Back to big and bad-dorados and papayra (not sure on spelling). Are very popular now.

Yep I see that stock everywhere. Bare tank with arrows, rays, dats, and sometimes p-bass. Can't imagine how that kind of stock is interesting to watch but I guess it's all for show like a piece of furniture.
