What makes the new trend fish?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I think it's a mixture of sudden availability and popular members setting the trends TBH. The threads I appreciate the most of the ones that are the members who do not post often but when they do, they show species not many others have interest or knowledge in.

That said most fish in my house are "trendy" species and that's by design. I wanted to know what the fuss is about for certain species and pulled the trigger on keeping a few since I changed my stock not long ago. I have been posting my fish/tanks less and less these days though :(

Same here.
It's funny most cichld enthusiast don't own pbass and most non-cichlid people do. They just want a large preditory fish. It seems the interest is more in the shock factor rather then the sp. themselves. I could be wrong, but that's what it seems like.

I keep pbass because i like them,i find they have personallity and are interactive,i also find them quite attractive, also alot of us dont feed live to our bass, where is the shock value?fact is they are a beautiful fish and if you read the bass threads, most owners seem to really enjoy and cherish there bass,to me they are like my dogs,i find your comment rather insulting,as if you are suggesting bass owners are only interested in what others think, its a pretty expensive status symbol dont you think?

Well everyone is entitled to their own opinion:) because sayin that there should be a forum just for festae so u don't have to see them as you look for other threads may not be a bad idea. I mean this is not the way I feel but someone could easily state the opposite and wish there was species forums so they wouldn't have to scroll Thu threads that aren't interesting to them too;) lol

I've done it all almost in this hobby from keeping the small community fish to large cichlids, and catfish, and pacus, and arowanas. I've done solo fish, and pairs, and cichlid communities. The thing is when U come on this site and see some of the most beautiful cichlids uve seen it makes you want them. I got sucked into the red terror craze but ditched them because they weren't for me. Then u got the big tank and big cichlids like umbee and dovii you wanna keep because you have a big tank and I would do that if I could because I love umbee. Right now I'm doing the pair thing because I like the challenge that comes with breeding fish. I like fish for personality reasons. Look at petsmart for example, if they get red Texas, and FH's in and they sell like crazy by soon that will die down. I see alot of trend fish being sold more and more like festea because people buy them because they hear so much about them but they don't live up to what a person wants. Follow trends if ya want because that's life but remember eventually you'll say you want something else because U see that fish everywhere and want something that no one has.

My comment wasn't meant to be insulting as I said " I could be wrong". Maybe for you it's different, but I know people who want that shock value when you walk in their house and say "wow those are huge!".
Everyone is entitled to their own option and I am not into trendiness or cookie cutter set ups. I like to do my own thing and don't care if I have what's popular.
It is just my opinnion and nothing more.

For the challenge ( raising a group of festae to adulthood and spawning them is one of the most rewarding things and not at all easy ). For the looks of course, few other cichlids can compare to the coloration and appearance of a healthy and high quality specimen. Great personality too, and many can also kept in community settings too, depending on the tank size and type of tank mates.

Regarding Umbees, they're big, beautiful, aggressive, and have awesome personalities. What's not to like??

I have kept a Mayan, and from what other members have said on here they have more personality than festae. and the colour isn´t so important. I´ve kept a marine reef before and If I wanted to have brightly coloured fish I would just go back to marine.

also I am always tempted by a big dovii or an umbee, cause its impressive. but I would much rather have a large tank with lots of different cichlid species as a community. it seems to be more interesting and rewarding, at least to me.

To me seems the trend is to keep fish that nobody else has or are at least uncommon in the hobby. Of coarse with so many in the hobby within a period of time the fish become no longer uncommon. You have such a large part of the hobby trying to out do the Jones's and another large part trying to keep up with the Jones's:screwy:

Trend! Certain fish become a trend for a reason its because they are awsome fish, one person talks about how awsome that fish is and how hard it was to get which makes other people go and look for it. To me umbee and dovii and almost all amphiliphous are my big favs, I didnt know anything about dovii or umbee till this site, up here in canada they are almost none exsistant, but I have put alot of effort in importing some because of the love I have heard.

I have learned to appreciate those species because of there look, personality, power and size.

A community tank is very nice to look at, but it is also much much easier, because you throw a bunch of fish in any tank you can get and watch them interact.

With south and central american cichlids you need to by more then one tank much more lol to accomadate each species individually( yes I know some people have SA CA community tanks but that only last so long untill they get full grown then 90 percent of the time you will be getting rid of all the fish except maybe a pair that you like) because and that involes alot time and even more time when pairing up. Also I love the umbee and dovii size because it takes long for them to grow to there full size so you need a lot of money lol and patience, because when that umbee or dovii hits 18 to 20 you have invested alot of time into that animal and thats what makes it special.

some good constructive conversations going on here. i like it!

i chose umbee because ive done the huge community with lots of different species and know what comes with it...huge water changes and lots of work on filters ect. i love huge aggressive fish and i want to keep my tanks pristene, and its a lot easier with one big pair, so thats why i personally moved in on them. i have other fish that are not normally talked about on here as well, but it seems big ca/sa are the most popular. i have crenicichla that are waaaay more personable and colorful than anything i own :) but lets get real, festae, umbee, dovii, jags, ornatum whatever the fish may be they are all very unique and interesting in their own way and thats the beauty of this hobby. i think lots of people reconize that and like to 'experience' the fish and buy and sell according to whether they like or dislike what they got. people in this hobby (in my area) are few and far between, so how else would you figure out what you like or dislike if you cant see for yourself?

and honestly people who know nothing about the hobby (my parents / friends ect) walk into my house and they are like....what is wrong with you man...lol i guess im a bit of a strange bird :D

I can say big cichlids act like no other fish. I'm not allowed to have a dog in my condo so I enjoy fish that acknowledge me and are personable. Can't tell me a school of 50 tetras are going to try to eat you if you forget to feed them for a couple hours. If anyone knows of a small fish or group of fish more personable than my "ugly" "common" 6yo old tilapia butti. I'm all ears
