What natives do you keep?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
As long as neither one will fit in the others mouth, they should get along ok. Not sure I would mix them though since both have relatively large mouths. Tempermentwise, I don't think there would be an issue. My 7" redfin pickerel is still doing well in the tank with the bowfin (although he does keep his distance).

Didn't we talk at the NANFA Convention this year? The bowfin pics I've posted are of one of the small ones we had then. Have gone from 1.5" up to nearly 9" now.

Just curious but has anybody mastered the Walleye? Great fish full of hate and I know they can get fairly good sized. Tried keeping minnows but found them more useful as Jag food then entertainment in the aquarium. thanks in advance

I keep natives. All were collected late summer / early fall at very small sizes. I have been very impressed by their growth. I have 1 LMB, 2 green sunfish, 1 bullhead, 1 rock bass, 1 bluegill, and 1 warmouth. The LMB is about 5". It has grown a lot since September. I have had no problems with aggression between the fish. I feed them krill, baby shrimp, night crawlers, rosies and occasionally crickets. The LMB is an eating and growing machine. Started at about 2 1/2". I am looking for a bigger tank so I can keep him.

Also, would like to collect a Northern Pike. I would get rid of most of my fish in order to keep a small pike. How much will one grow in a year or so? What and how much would one eat in a tank?

Rather then a pike you might want to look into a redfin or grass pickerel...they only max out at about a foot, give or take. You could keep it for life.

^^^Yup and they look and act just like a Northern Pike.......from what I here.

I still going to get me a Pike since I know a spot that is so dam easy to catch some baby 4-6" in the spring/summer.

Nice list...except for the carp, they aren't native.
