What natives do you want?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
My grandson caught one about 2 miles from our house in Terre Haute, last summer. I would have kept that one but it was about 18 inches, and i wasnt prepared to house one that size. So it was immediately released back into that same creek , where im sure it is today, with gar as well.

Guys, check your netting rules and get a group of guys together and seine some fish! Good way to get "show" or "perfect" caliber fish. No worries about it being too big then either! Im going to have to agree with him. Gar and bowfin are probably some of the coolest north american natives.

Our north american fish are big in the hobby in asia. They think sunfish are awesome. They are also sold in petstores in europe though.

Jim, I think you should get one of my fish when they come in! :D

I have been keeping fish of all kinds for a long time, but until i started keeping North American Natives, I never knew or saw the whole picture.

Anyone can go down to the local LFS, pick out somthing from the thousands that they have for sale and go home.

When i load up my jeep, with all the gear i care to take, go to a local or distant, creek or river, with my grandchildren in tow, spend the day outdoors, enjoying nature, teaching conservation methods to the next generation of fishkeepers, Go home at the end of the day, tired , muddy, etc. I for one feel it has been a Good Day.

I never got that feeling from a trip to the pet store, and the beautiful fish i brought home were FREE, and much more appreciated than something from Madagascar, that some other clown caught, to try to weasel me outta my hard earned Bucks $

To each his own !!

And I think maybe i should have one of your fish when they come in Buddy, Is there anything you would like to have from Indiana :headbang2

I am very interested in locating some bowfin and gar, Jim. I know you are a big native guy and am hoping you can point me to some spots in our general area (exact locations, preferably). Terre Haute may be my border for the South and Muncie to the North. I would love to locate some juveniles to house and perhaps ship to some others that are interested in these natives. Thanks.

I dont have the tank space to do anything crazy right now. I am looking for unique natives in fry size.

Eventually I will be having natives in a 75g planted. So I have some room for some bigger stuff then.

The lab that I work in would be interested in getting some indiana natives...northern studfish if you could manage Jim. :D

There are a couple types of top minnow...black stripe and black spotteds.

Im sure there are Bowfin here, especially in the one creek,

As for gar, i know of another location a couple of miles from my home, where the river flooded a local strip pit hole and now it is known as the gar pit. literally over run with all sizes of gar.

As for the stud fish, i would have to do some study, to locate them, i have mainly concentrated on the Sunfish and darters, but if they are here, ill let you know. :)

Northern studfish are gorgeous. They get to be about 5-6" and form harems (one male, several females). A great "minnow" to keep in captivity.

My boss (an ichthyologist) got super excited when he learned you were willing to ship fish jim! Ha are you sure it would be legal?

Ive done a little investigation and find that the studfish is only located in the eastern part of Indiana, in a small area at that.
However, im not giving up yet :) although im in the western part.

The shipping part ill look at as well, but i really dont see a problem if i can just locate the fish.
