I've never had a desire to keep natives and I also understand that the authorities frown upon such practices. I'm not judging anyone who keeps natives. I just think that there are enough true hobby fish to keep me happy.
Visit NANFA a non-profit site just for native enthusiasts, and you will find that many fish at pet stores are native.

If I could have any natives regardless of tank size, Id of course go for Gar and Bowfin as well Burbot

This may sound crazy but I would like to own every Centrarchid there is from the Mud Sunfish, to the Handpaint Bluegill; and just like Thalan said....... a Bowfin, who wouldnt want a Bowfin?!?

I know we have them but i would like them anyway --White bass and White perch-- i know i know the white perch is introduced but still would like it.

I have been keeping fish of all kinds for a long time, but until i started keeping North American Natives, I never knew or saw the whole picture.

Anyone can go down to the local LFS, pick out somthing from the thousands that they have for sale and go home.

When i load up my jeep, with all the gear i care to take, go to a local or distant, creek or river, with my grandchildren in tow, spend the day outdoors, enjoying nature, teaching conservation methods to the next generation of fishkeepers, Go home at the end of the day, tired , muddy, etc. I for one feel it has been a Good Day.

I never got that feeling from a trip to the pet store, and the beautiful fish i brought home were FREE, and much more appreciated than something from Madagascar, that some other clown caught, to try to weasel me outta my hard earned Bucks $

To each his own !!

Well said :grinno:

Im sure there are Bowfin here, especially in the one creek,

As for gar, i know of another location a couple of miles from my home, where the river flooded a local strip pit hole and now it is known as the gar pit. literally over run with all sizes of gar.

Could you please share the name of the creek as well as the location of the "gar pit". I would sincerely appreciate it. I love fishing but I am a little unfamiliar with our Indiana waters. Most of my fishing has been in Florida lakes and canals and little retention ponds in Indiana.

Ive done a little investigation and find that the studfish is only located in the eastern part of Indiana, in a small area at that.
However, im not giving up yet :) although im in the western part.

The shipping part ill look at as well, but i really dont see a problem if i can just locate the fish.

If you need, I can help ship.
