ok, finally got $150 saved up. Im wanting to buy a canister filter, i so tired of the HOB fitlers and all there problems.

What one should i get? Im used to using carbon HOB filters, so i know nothing about the canisters, i didnt even know there were some that didnt use carbon, lol.

I have a 55g tank, and i want to get one that is rated a lil higher than that. It seems everytime a get a filter that says is for a 55g, it never seems to work well.

Right now im looking at a Marineland Magnum 350 filter. Shows to be rated for up to 100g with a 350 gph flow rate.

If anyone has a better suggestion of a canister filter that i can buy locally at a store and would be great for my tank, let me know!!!

If you want better..buy online.

fx5 $200 online via ebay. too strong for a 55 but u can turn down the flow rate

Hands down the best would be an Eheim 2217.

Dead silent, ultra reliable.

I had two Eheim canisters run dry for over 24 hours(bad leak) while I was away and they still run like new.

that one is rated way above a 55g, and is a lil expensive. Maybe a lower model?

if you tight on cash i run an xp3 on my 75 alone and the thing is a beast!!! just got a 125 gallon and this time i have a bunch of cash so i am going eheim... only because i want to get the eheim experience... otherwise i would just buy the rena xp3... for gph, wattage, and the fact that you can get their sick heater that hooks up to the intake for cheap.. been running it for a year now no problems... quite too!!

fx5... over rated....

o yea some people suggest to do a sump when i asked about what eheim to buy... if you have time on your hands and are handy... maybe you could build one... since your tank is 55 gallon i think you would only need a 20 gallon tank to build it.. i have 0 experience with sumps so don't quote me on using a 20 gallon tank...lol

dont buy stuff you dont need :) save for things you do...why overspend on a powerful filter then "lower the flow rate" when u cud use that money for fishkeeping in other ways? like a uv sterilizer or better bio media

try eheim 2213, i think its on sale at dr f & s or try ebay/amazon

ok well ive narrowed it down to 2 filters that fit my price range

1. Eheim Classic 2215 which claims up to 92g and has a flow rate of 135gph and is $119.99

2. Marineland Magnum 350 which claims to be up to 100g and 350gph at $117.99.

Now there is also a Magnum 350 pro that is the same except it comes with 2 bio wheels as well for $122.99

If anyone has used any of these filters, please let me know what you think. I want this to be the last filter i have to buy!!!
