ok well ive narrowed it down to 2 filters that fit my price range

1. Eheim Classic 2215 which claims up to 92g and has a flow rate of 135gph and is $119.99
Eheims are overrated IMHO. The fanbois will scream at me but the maintanence is a pain and they're expensive. They were top of the line 20 years ago, I know. the 2215 is too small.

2. Marineland Magnum 350 which claims to be up to 100g and 350gph at $117.99.
I Got a Magnum, used, with my first 55 gal tank. In 1996. I have replaced the impeller since, but it's been running constantly for 14years. Yeah these are good. Make sure to run the output into a bio-wheel.

Now there is also a Magnum 350 pro that is the same except it comes with 2 bio wheels as well for $122.99
Oh, yeah bio-wheels definately.

If anyone has used any of these filters, please let me know what you think. I want this to be the last filter i have to buy!!!
Rena XP3 (not pictured)
These are awesome, affordable, conveinent, well built, and can make pizza. I recommend an XP3.

And good luck with that.
You'll have a bigger tank within 2 years.

I would only go for the 2215 if you have a powerhead or two in addition. The 2215 will give you plenty of biomedia but the flow-rate is a little low so you may end up with some particulates in the water.

I do have to disagree that Eheims are a pain to service. I can completely clean my 2213 and 2236 in less than 10 minutes start to finish. Plus, I clean my canisters once every 3 months and not because of flow loss, just because of habit.

well one magnum comes with the bio wheels, the other does not.

the xp3 is for almost a 200g tank, and i only have a 55g. its also almost $200. Even the next step down, the xp2 is for a 75g and its $150.

Well the next step up is gated way higher than what i need and is more expensive.

You need to look online for better pricing at least on the XP series.

Shame you dont live in PA as I would give you a 30% off coupon for a XP3 or XP4. I am going to go get another XP4 for 150 next week.

Oh and I had an XP4 on my 55. Though I had planned on upgrading I thought it did a great job with the tank. my water was crystal clear. I do have to clean the bottom filters a bit more though since my oscars and my pleco are messy and I get a lot of waste in my cannister.

I run an XP3 on my 40gal planted tank.
It is not overkill for a 55gal.
Check online for better prices or
PM me if you would be interested a used filter.

Those tank ratings above (XP2 for 75gal) are
the MAX size of aquarium to run it on and
are manufacturer generated numbers.
None of us would use them on that size of tank.
Do you put the 4-for-$99 tires on your car?

/shudder
