What puffer is this?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Planted is great for puffers!

magpie magpie has a Congo puffer :)

Yes, I have a Spotted Congo puffer aka Leopard Spotted Puffer - the Schoutedeni.

Mine is newer to me - I started him in my heavily planted 65 gallon tank with bichirs, rope fish, congo tetras, butterfly fish, and 2 plecos. He started fin nipping 2 of my bichirs so he went into my 10 gallon planted tank where he bothers no one but shrimplets - so far doesn't even go for the adult cherry shrimp. (Am working on an upgrade - he is about 2 inches now.) There are micro rasboras, scarlet badis, a pygmy cory and a couple of geriatric hockeystick pencilfish in there.

They are known for being a more peaceful puffer, just be wary of what you add with them as it may not be foolproof - they are puffers, after all. From my experience and a few others, it seems that they are generally fine with tetras/schooling fish, cories, and plecos. Since you are basing your tank around your puffer, any others you add should be fish you like but also that you are OK parting with just in case.

Mine has been easy to feed. He ate live blackworms from tongs on day 2 and I've been able to get him to eat a variety of live and "dead" things from the tongs ever since. He won't eat frozen fish though, like Silversides. Prefers blood/black worms, earthworms, krill, and of course snails. I haven't yet tried clams/mussels etc.

If you have your tank already planted I'd leave it as is. Mine seems to really get a lot of enjoyment and mental stimulation out of exploring the plants and hunting for snails - in both my 65 and the 10.

I got mine from Wet Spot - they are my LFS but they are fantastic, ship, and they have them right now. If you're ready and interested I'd personally jump on it because they are kind of hard to find.

Pics from today. The jungley 10 gallon that he loves to explore in - he's in the bottom right corner. (Again, upgrade is in the works, this is a temp. situation to get him out of my 65 gallon)

And someone saying hi - aka begging for food.

Wow what great pictures! Thank you magpie magpie !

I called the wet spot and and they do have them in stock, I am in california, they said shipping would be $39 so it would be $239 out the door the said. Shesh that is an expensive fish. It really does look like a small Fahaka tho.

My goal would be to fatten him up as much as possible so he wouldnt get lost in a 75 gallon.

I found this online, I will be very closely mimicking this tank for my 75 gallon

It is an expensive fish! They are hard to come by and are just recently being found in the industry again. I bit the bullet because the chances were higher with this puffer that it could live with other fish than most others.

They have them listed at 1.75 inches on their website but mine was definitely 2 inches. Also, because they can live with other fish, you can get a bunch of schoolers in your 75 so that it always looks like there's something going on in there. Then you have a puffer to have your interactive pet. ( just don't get anything eel or worm shaped be on the safe side ;) )

I just picked up 75lbs of river rock form my local landscaping yard,$0.14/lb. :D

Ill be putting in a larger order for Malsaian Driftwood from Dr. Fosters and Smith, they are just $8/ea with free shipping over $29. Whatever I dont use ill just sell to my LFS.

I am going to be getting 100lbs of play sand from Homedepot for like $4 per 50lb bag.

So yea, getting things going :)

Awesome!

Your tank is gorgeous. I never jumped into CO2. Will you run this one low tech then?

Yep! low tech, easy peasy, stress free.

A hightech planted tank is kinda like driving your car with the gas pedal slammed to the floor the whole time. Its super fun and crazy and makes for quite the thrill, but something is going to go wrong, and when it does, its catastrophic. Its become a stress inducer, instead of a stress reducer. Time to move on to the next project :)

That's kind of what I always assumed, which is why I've never jumped into it. Agreed - sress is the opposite feeling you should be feeling related to tanks. (But then again, that is one gorgeous tank up there, too... so I get it.)

Yea, it was fun, but it was a candle that burned bright and went out quick. It just wasn't sustainable. Ill get back into it again one day, when I forget how much of a pain it is haha

For now Im super excited about this puffer tank
