If you plan to get a pair of festae, then that is not a good community cichlid choice. If you got one instead of a pair, you'd probably have better luck, so long as you have fish that can hold their own, but not go bezerk... like a freddie or something. Mine, when I get her, will be in a tank with a freddie, oscar, and hartwegi. So... we'll see. I've known people to keep festae in large tanks with other cichlids, but if that is your plan, imo, you should not get a pair. You have to decide if you want a pair of breeding fish, or a community cichlid tank. It is tough to do both.

I wouldn't add any other cichlids with them in a 75. Some cichlids may be smaller and weaker than Festae as adults but will mature and grow faster as juveniles. That could lead to some of your Festae being killed. Why take the chance on such pricey fish? Festae have a hard enough time fending off each other in growout tanks. Try some schooling fish instead. If you end up with a pair that is tolerant of tankmates, you could keep them with SD and Clown Loaches in your 150. I wish you the best. I'll be taking the Festae plunge again real soon.

Get the festaes....about 6-8 of them to grow out a pair

BTW... Gruff is right on, on this point. I think I missed the 75 gallon part on that somewhere. You really have no community cichlid kind of option with larger SA/CA cichlids like Festae in that size tank anyway.

I'm getting the festaes but someone suggested I go with 1 festae, 1 cuban, and 1 black nasty
If this is a 75 gallon tank we are talking about, I am going to say bad idea. You will get away with it while they are juvies... but as they mature, your going to need to upgrade the footprint of that tank. So it just depends on what your future holds in flexibility for tank upgrades. If there is no upgrade in the cards for the future, stick with getting a group of festae, and letting a pair form.

Just my opinion.
