I kept a $30 dragonscale halfmoon show betta in a 1.5 gallon for 4 years. But onto the op's question. Let me say it again CROAKING GOURAMIS!!!! They are very similar to a betta but smaller than a guppy. Also maybe a single show guppy. They're are some that are really cool. Check out Russian purple snowflakes. Youd just need a little air driven filter for them. The Gouramis wouldn't need one they are air breathers.

Yes 2.5 gallons is perfect for them you can breed them in 5 gallons at least it's not a 1 gallon bowl
