Just bought 2 groups of tropheus the person who I bought them from said he feeds NLS community and once and a while omega algae flake. So MORE NLS community formula LESS algae flake. Should I continue to feed the higher protein food or go to a pure algae flake food diet?

When I kept and bred tropheus, I fed them a variety of flake foods (even occasional live foods) but made sure they got some spirulina flakes each day.

NLS cichlid formula is supposed to be a good option for tropheus. Doesn't cause bloat or so I've heard. I had been feeding my tropheus a different premium brands' Veggie Pellet. I won't post the name to avoid a crapstorm. However, I never lost a tropheus to bloat using either the NLS or the Premium Veggie Pellets.

Spriluna from YFS your fish stuff. It has 47% protein. 100% Veggie based. Comes as a flake or pellet and supersoft pellet. I don't keep Africans but there is a tropheus right on the bag. I do feed it to my other cichlids. They love it. From my umbees to my convicts.

When I was keeping tropheus years ago I fed NLS exclusively, as did other breeders I know. No bloat, plenty of breeding, tons of healthy fry.

Keep in mind that all NLS formulas contain algae meal (that consists of seaweed, kelp, and several micro-algae) as well as spirulina. They also just released a new algae based pellet, and algae based gel, if algae content is a concern.

New Life Spectrum's AlgaeMAX is a diet for Herbivores (Tangs, Tropheus, etc) that is made of 9 different types of algae, seaweed, and kelp. This food was designed to be a complete diet for all herbivores. AlgaeMAX takes advantage of a new pellet forming process that lets New Life include more algae and seaweed, while keeping a greater amount of secondary ingredients like Whole Atlantic Krill, Vitamins, and Trace Elements. The nine main ingredients are:

•Chlorella Algae
•Red Seaweed
•Kelp
•Chondrus crispus
•Ulva Seaweed
•Wakame Seaweed
•Spirulina
•Spinosum Seaweed
•Eucheuma cottonii

Available mid December 2013, this Herbivore diet is set to be the best and only food like it on the market! We use it in our store and even our finicky Tangs LOVE this stuff!!

The only food I feed my petros and Trophs are dainichi and nls. I've heard ocean nutrition formula two pellets are good too.
