Self explanatory title, getting some at 1.5 inch and wondering if I can ask the seller to get me a sexed group.

You can usually tell males from females by about 2.5" -3". And they will spawn at that size.

Above, pair with fry, once spawning occurs, colors change, the females color contrasts (dark against light) and the dark dorsal dark notch can disappear.

By the way there are a number of color/location variants of P panamense.
Back in the early 90s I had a pair, caught closer to the sea that was almost a solid pink (lost the photos), compared to the more mottled variant (like the photos above).

Any chance of collecting some of these different variants? That would be neat to see.

I got mine at around that size or slightly bigger (2”) and asked the same question to the seller. They sent me a larger and smaller fish that turned out to be male and female but was a bit of a guess. Best bet is to buy five or six. Better chance to get a pair. Mine never bred but did show breeding colors for the two years I had them.

As soon as Panama's lockdown lets up, its my ambition to hit some of the spots.
I went to Chepo and the Tuira River (where some are endemic) during a brief Covid opening a while back, but it was the rainy season, and the river and even small tributaries were raging.
They supposedly share waters near Chepo, with Isthmoheros tuyrensis, Darienheros calebrense, and Geophagus crassilabrus all on my wish list.

I'd like to see those solid pink ones too, but I think the ones I'm getting are just the usual mottled ones.

Jeff Rapps emailed me about them several years ago and said he'd seen them in the wild, "gorgeous red flashes over gold substrate." I don't think we have anything like that in the hobby. None of the groups I've bought have been very stable, but who knows how inbred they are. I had some that showed nice pinks and reds but it certainly wasn't high coverage. I wish we could get some wild stock back in the US.
