straing that, \i found blue background works better, but i \have only had \it, \ntt and \ngt.
also i have quite low temp, around 23 C, and this has helped with stability.
I think u shpould try all the factors: lighting, backgrounds, dither fish, dcor, no-decor, and if none of those work, then its down to the genetics of that tiger, some just arn't ever stable.
to confuse things even more, I 've had unstable tigers for years, and 2 have now turned realy stable and beautiful.
Also, it seems pulchers are the most stable of all the tigers. though NGT's can be equally as srunning IMO. why dont u get one of those Berserker.?
I have a small NGT from Wildwoods-Keith told me it what stunning in the shop and I believe him. Its the most unstable of the bunch and I've never seen it move from its corner in the 5 weeks I've had. It hasn't eaten either and I'm very worried I'm going to lose it. As patient as I am these little Dats are doing my head in...

dats generally like their environment to be more secluded, but i think they're trainable. it does however, take long *** time to get 'em to come out of their shells. it probably took my biggest ntt about 1 month and a half to eat its very first meal when i got it @ 4". i had to hand feed it krills in the beginning, and now almost 2 yrs later, it still "attacks" my finger every time i have my hand in the tank.
my theory is that they'll eventually come around, but how long it'll take be4 they do, da's a different story on each different dat

NGT are funny fish all the ones i have had like to play dead some of the time

sometimes my kids say dad you have a dead fish but they seam to play dead when stangers enter the room or at water change time

a trick i found with thin bars is to add a drop of melafix at water change time they will turn stable as soon as you add the melafix this is only a temp fix and they will fade back to normal after 2 days this only works on thin bars

amazed and delighted to report that after 5 weeks of hiding in a corner my NGT came out for a bit and fed on some frozen bloodworm. Must have known I was talking smack about it I guess! Just got to get it take some meatier food now-I certainly won't try starving it thats for certain...

i was just about to post that the ngt i got from wildwoods was exactly the same and i did not see it eat for weeks then it came out and eat bloodworm and now it feeds really well on small chopped prawn bits too.
food for NGT needs to be small as the mouths are much smaller than other datnoids.

mines are not shy there only 2 inches lol

i've only had smaller dats but they have no problem coming out. my ATs were out chasing each other all the time and when i'd come by the tank they were right with the cichlids at the top of the tank wanting food. my IT is a little more shy. he likes to chill in plants but will also come out when i come to feed. all were 4" or less.
