I'm going from a 30gal to a 110 & everyone I know gawks at the 110. 110 is pretty big but not quite "monster", I don't think. 300's not bad but then you have these guys building 1000gal+ & they seem in a whole different class by themselves. Based on that & the 750 I saw last weekend I'd have to draw the line at 1000 gal.

<100 - small time hobbiest stuff.
100 - 600 = serious enthusiast / very big tank but still "it'll fit in my living room" size.
600-1000 = Giant tank status. Entry level MFK
1000+ = True MFK. These guys are building their own 'cause they don't make them that big commercially. These people are wrapping a significant part of their lives around these tanks, modifying their homes or businesses & dedicating serious funds to the projects.

Perhaps we should have a poll based on single largest tank size to see what our community averages out at?

I think you probably hit this right on the head.

depends who you ask. my current 150G is a swimming pool to my friends. my old 4ft (70g) is one too but anything over 200g is monster to me. dont see many that size here.
anything over 500 means your clinically insane and you have too much money so send some to me lol.

lol how many times has this question been asked

I didn't mean to offend anyone. That 110gal is a monster to me. But I don't kid myself about being in the same league with jamey0615 or johnptc. I never will be. Don't even want to be.

1000gal is the low end of monster. Especially when you consider guys like JohnPTC doing things normally only seen at professionally operated aquarium museums. I saw a 750 last weekend. It was beautiful. It was enormous! It had a couple sharks in it! But it wasn't a monster. When I think the biggest of the big I think of the National Aquarium in Baltimore, or the VA Beach Aquarium. Saw a real nice aquarium center in New Jersey. 600gal tanks in those places get relegated to a corner in some hallway. They aren't main attractions.

That's the way it should be. We're talking about superstars here. They should be rare. If everyone could do it, it wouldn't be special.

And that's not the poll I had in mind. I was thinking of polling to see what people actually owned. I think you'll find a LOT of people here have tanks in the ?00 size range. That's too common to be the superstar level & dwarfed by some of the real heavy hitters around here.

So far the 200-500 gallon range is over 50%. Please keep them coming.
