What substrate do you guys have with your poly

Go bare bottom. So much cleaner & less headaches. They do fine w/ or w/o sand.

One of Bichirs natural defenses is to burrow, both for defense when feeling threatened, and also for catching live prey.
This is why IMO it's best to have some kind of substrate.
Not to mention it brings out their colors and patterns and (again IMO) don't look so "clinical" as a bare bottom tank.

I have no headaches with my sand.
Detritus etc gets taken with one of the filters, and Garnet is so heavy it rarely makes it up the intakes.

What is garnet? I'm having a hard time finding on Google. I get hair coloring products....

I use Black Tahitian Moon Sand in one tank and Pool Filter Sand in the other. Sand can be a bit difficult to clean. Gravel Vac will suck up sand if it's not heavy enough, I usually just siphon the top which you can lose some sand doing that, but not much. Black sand will show more detritus than natural looking sand. So if you don't want company to come over and see crap in your tank, I'd just go with more of a reddish or natural color.
