What tank size is realistic

Take a 125, turn it. Then say, "Look, it's smaller than 4 feet!"

Have you decided which lake and or which kind of fish? Malawi Peas and Haps will be kinda tight in a 4 footer. Mbuna will do well in one though. that being said, I have a 6 footer with Mbuna and at adult size I still have quite a few 4-6 inch fish. This is my 6 foot 135 with about 30 Mbuna.....

I havent gotten there yet.. I am looking at a similar look as you have going on there but i think i might want to go towards a single species tank - all the same color. Just think that looks cool. If you just "let them go", will they breed and will most of the fry get to maturity? I dont want to deal with separating pregnant fish, etc. Male only tank? Will that still be a lively tank? How does that sound?

I really have a lot of learning to do before i do anything 'real'

Really like your tank Jc!

Some fry will get to maturity although probably not as many if you were to seperate them out. For me that's a plus as it's loads of work if you don't have much time. If your thinking of going for single species tank do you have a favorite color? I would probably go with Mbuna for a 90 gal. You could check out YouTube vids to get a better feel for what you might like.

I really like that deep blue color some of the species have. I was looking at salausi's. is it true that only the dominant male has bright colors?

I've never tired and all male tank but I know my subdominant males are alot less colorful than the dominant. You want an awesome species tank that will fit the bill, then Demasoni might be the ticket. They are dwarf Mbuna so they only reach about 3 inches. 1 male to about 5 females and the beauty is they will breed and there are always LFS looking for good quality Demasoni. Acei tend to be larger, reaching 5-7" and Saulosi are more middle of the road sizewise. Either way, a single species 90-110 would look stunning IMO

Mine breed like crazy, but stangely enough only the Rusites and Labs crossbreed. Cool as hell looking fish, but no value really. Once a month, I pull the rock and cull. I 've recently added a large Synodontis and moved my filter intakes super low to help thin the herd
