What tank size is realistic

Sounds like a pain in the ... And thats about once a month?

Does it take them long to 'recover' ? If I mess around in my Oscar's tank, he gets a little stressed i.e. dramatic (starts floating weird, color fades).. He's always fine about 10 min later though.

They stress out for about 5 minutes and then immediately start breeding again. lol. Ive recently moved my filter intakes as low in the tank as I can get them and added a pretty decent sized Syno to try to help out. We'll see if it makes a difference. It should since im already finding half a dozen or so in the filters when I do maintenance.

To all: Tonight im going to start to warm up my wife to the idea!! (wish me luck)
I actually let my wife pick the 135, but I really had to sell the taller, shorter tank not looking as good. She liked the idea of a lower longer tank, she just didnt realize it also meant bigger so we both won :)

Yeah ive been reading about Synodontis' and they seem to do a good job! How often do you clean your filters to prevent decay of the dead fry?

I have vowed to build a wet/dry filter for my next tank.. No real good reason other than it seems like a cool project.. I have 2 Fluval 405's running in my other 90 gal and i really like them..

My biggest challenge is going to be the location of the tank.. AND the cost.. But all in all it doesn't have to be crazy expensive

The fry are always alive because the Rena's have top mounted motors. There is a small sediment trap in the bottom of the filters and I always find fish hanging out in there....haven't found a dead one yet

Really? interesting.. What do you do with them when you find them in the fry-trap? and how big are they over average?

(im in serious brain-picking mode right now, promise to do a MBUNA setup thread when i start)

The hybrids go in the 300 and well......usually become food, although i do have about 4 that have grown into some cool looking rather large fish that my Jag just cant catch. The Demasoni go back in the 135. 2 of the females that are currently holding are from the filter lol. They are pretty small but never run out of food in there since it's where it ends up

Just to add to the conversation:
I have a 300 gal african tank. I had a problem with overbreeding for a while too.
I removed all the holey rock that the fry were hiding in.
I added more adult fish. Now when peacocks/haps spawn, about a dozen fish will pounce on the egg, making it hard for the female to get them.
I also got rid of all my labs.. Yellow labs are very pretty, but they breed/hybridize like mad.

I've thought of adding a predator too, but so far my birth control is pretty effective. The kids do miss seeing all the fry popping out of the holey rock though..

Petsmart has a good deal on a four foot long 150 gallon tank right now. My African set-up is a six foot long 125, but you could have a lot of fun with the 150. I've got five species of Cichlids and two species of synodontus cats. I built my own sump out of an old 20 gallon tank, and it keeps up fine with my ever growing population. I've got so many hiding spots that I've gone from around 30 original fish to about 60 now. I catch juvies and give them to a few neighbors and I started a tank for one of my nephews and regularly give some to him.
