What tank size to go with??

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Ahh man that spounds like a crappy padt few days...uggh.

Yeah i would also try truvu and fishtanksdirect. I havent heard anything bad about them..

soupa2 soupa2 has a fishtankdirect tank.

Somethings to consider and maybe pist in the set up section are thickness of the walls and the braces in the top of the tank.

I was told for my tank i could have gotten away with 1/2 inch panels but i wanted it over built so i went with 3/4 and 3 top braces (im sure most builders would automatically go with 3 braces) at 3/4 inches it was still cheaper than a glass tank that has thinner panels i was shocked.

I heard that acrylic trades like a commodity so the prices of panels fluctuates. So it could be cheaper/higher at different times

The weight and finding enough help.... Major factor to consider.

When going with a large glass tank do not skimp on glass. Spend the extra money on low iron for the main front panel for sure. I had a standard 210 before the 300 and I hated the green tinge in the glass. It is more noticeable when dealing with thick glass.

I just saw truvu has shipping in the price of their tanks so that helps things stay pretty transparent (no glass pun intended lol) but yeah i am going to make sure the tank is as safe as possible especially with 1year old and 3 year old running around throwing stuff around haha. I am going to check back with midwest and see what they are working with. Plus i am currently working at an LFS on the weekends a few hours to help them get some programs set up so i may be able to get a good deal on a tank but i havent asked them yet. I know they would take care of my Im just not sure if they have the ability to buy tanks at that size.

I know I have enough people to help its just a matter of getting them all together in one place at the same time LOL

Man that was my concern too with young kids.

My tank was sooo simple to move it was amazing.....lol i didnt do it (back) hahaha i just paid a mover. Took two of them to move it. 3 to get it down the stairs.

What about just getting a 180 for now. The dimensions should allow you to grow out these polys for yrs, and give you time to plan things for the dream tank ? I really does take awhile for them to hit monster sizes and theres no gaurantee that all of them will.

You know i have never really considered doing a 180 but I also want to minimize the amount of times i will have to purchase large tanks. but maybe you do have a point. Also, it would save me money to spend more money on filtration.

I will definitely keep it on my list. I am sure i could get a killer deal on one at my LFS if i wanted to buy new.

I'd price out used and a new 180. See about getting it drilled we can slap a sump on it and get off with an inexpensive filtration system. I only say this because a dream tank is a dream tank lol skimping on $$$ Could be something you regret...im not saying waste money either. Bur you get my drift....

Yeah, you know what Frank i think thats a great idea. I am still going to see what midwest says. But it would also give me about a year before i need to upgrade. Also it will give me some time to working on my plumbing skills as well because i have never had to plumb a tank before.

I may stick with glass though because i know my kids will scratch the acrylic if given the opportunity.

A standard 180 is a great all purpose tank. Usually not too difficult to get and price is usually decent.

Sometimes with a good sale going where you purchase online and then pick up in store you can get a 125 gallon for pretty good price at Petsmart. Not that this is the best size but another idea. But of course you will want to upgrade!

Yeah exactly, but no way a 125 would work for me. I would have to upgrade too soon lol

Maintenance is harder on a 30” high tank but it does look really good.

Definitely go for the 72x36, that’s the size I’m after when I get a new tank.
