I got a ten gallon tank for my birthday and I am not getting any assistance with my inquisitions elsewhere. I asked on one place and they said I could have pristilla tetras, neon tetras or harlequin rasboras and that is all. They said white clouds were too active for a ten gallon... I am sort of reluctant to disregard someone's advice, but if a larger fish is OK in a tank that is 6 body lengths, why isn't it OK to have 12.5 body lengths for a small fish!?

There are several tetras smaller than the pristilla (x-ray) tetra. It is 5 cm. Serpae and Phantom tetras are smaller... On the large expansive gallery, most of these fishes need 40 L.

I found another database and the smallest minimum tank size I could find was 15 gallon... except for a betta. Micro-rasboras and Celesial Pearl Danios are no where to be found around here. I am sort of disappointed.

The following fishes 2 inches and under can be found in my LFS:

-silvertip tetra
-head and tail light tetra
-neon tetra*
-zebra danio + other assorted danios
-black phantom tetra
-serpae tetra
-cherry barb*
-white cloud minnow
-harlequin rasbora

*I don't really want these two fishes... cherry barbs don't school and neon tetras are a bit cliche.*
I have 6 odessa barbs but those are a bit too big and in another aquarium. I really want to get this tank going. All my other tanks have plant destroyers in them, and I want a nice planted tank. PLEASE HELP ME!

my fav that I have had in my 10 before were:
black tetras, harlequins, zebra or leopard danios and cardinal tetras.

black skirted tetras are larger than the average tetra (deep bodied and over 2 inch long) but they are fine in a 10 gallon? Well I'll be darned.

Would you say zebra danios are too active for a 10 gallon?

I would say that.

Why not get some black skirt tetras?

I always thought White Clouds were pretty cool fish to keep. I kept them for quite some time. Very interesting behavoir, great colors.

Get danios. they are FINE in a 10 gallon, I've seen them in a 5 gallon happy as can be. Hardy as %#&*, these guys can thrive in almost anything. In nature, these fish actually do live in stagnant rice paddies, thought you might want to keep your tank cleaner than that.

RUMEY NOSE,NEONS,CARDINALS(THEY DIE TO EASLY THOUGH IMO),WHITE CLOUDS ARE COOL TO AND BLEEDING HEART TETRAS ARE A BIGGER ONE THAT WILL WORK

White clouds aren't tetras but I definitely had them in mind from the start. If I can't get black phantoms or silvertip tetras, I will go with white clouds. Actually, if it costs too much to get 8 or so of one of those tetras. White clouds are like 48 cents. Last time I was at the LFS there was only one or two of each kind of tetra...
