Ifratt you should give the guy a breakman, he just lost some prize fish for an unknown reason. I think caps is ok in a situation like that.

I am very sorry to hear about your loss man. Try to keep chin up and move forward. I don't like to even do 50% WC for fear of things like this. hen I do big maint. I am always freeked out for about 24 hours. I stick with Prime.
Once again I am very sorry for your loss. I hope I never have to go through it.

thanx i have always done 50-75% changes..my chin is up i am just piss off...as bad as this is i say as one door closes another one opens...i have been thinking alot about rays but the tin could be an issue and i have 3 tsns to go into this tank so the tins could have been eatten later, but i would have rather crossed that bridge at the time i needed to...i also have a few monster tank construtions planed and i mainly want to figure out wtf happened in this case...

Do you normally do a 75% WC? Its possible you gotta mini cycle or something goin on, and being as you had such large fish in that tank, might have been too much to handle?

How are the other fish doing? Did you only loose the tins?

That seriously bites mate, loosing fish sucks. Especially when you have to sit back and watch them die, and there is nothing you can do to fix it. :(

ya, 75% normaly, just finished with a mini-cycle, i was doing more wc...to be sure it doesn't happen until my fx5 comes in...it comes today...they seem good...this time yes just the tins...during the mini-cycle i lost a rtc, tsnxrtc, and a yellow bullhead...my filtration at the time of death was a emperor 400, homemade @ 375gph, and a ac70...around 1075gph with the fx5 i will have around 1400gph...i will put the ac70 on the othe tank it belongs on cause that tank needs it...a heavy stocked 55gal...with a emperor 280 and the ac70 normally perfict minus ac70 sketchy...

just some more info wc didn't syphon bottom but once a week...this was just water aswell...

Here's my two cents.

You should not have been doing such large water changes every two/three days. Doing it maybe once a month is acceptable, but really, if you change it that often there will eventually be no bacteria left. Also, it is unlikely that it was a pH issue because tinfoil barbs have a larger pH range than arrowanas. (6.5-7.5 vs 6.5-7)

Anyway, I'm sorry you lost those fish. I'd be bummed if I lost any of mine, let alone eight.

yea well when i lost some fish and people just told me i was overstocked and got what i deserved i didnt flip out and start talking crap about them... i just let it go.. this guy finds it necessary to insult me over and over like i dont know what im doing .. so ... and since he lost fish im supposed to let him talk to me like that ... I LOVE THIS PLACE!!! .... you know i would be more then happy to share some exp. where i had some of the same kind of problem .. but when he just acts like he is better then me and talks **** .. he can blow off ...

and to the OPer since you know so much more then I ... there is no need for me to share .. i will just go play with the little kids ... and watch my rays and dats swim around all happy like ...

ya i usually do 20-25% change every 2 week, because im afraid of killing all my fish.. i been doing this 20-25%since i started with fish.. not to sound mean but i think 75% is way to much for couple of days. you are stressing out your fish and your putting in new water.. sorry for you loss.... soo sad.. people been losing fish lately. *knock on wood*.. =/

Ouch man really sorry to hear that...has to be gut-wrenching :(

On a side note, I used NovAqua+ for years before switching to Prime a few months ago, and never had an issue with it other than price.

again you miss the point!!!!! i am NOT attacking you for you knowlage, lack of or even your prissy attitude...i am STATING that caps. it dumb to cry about and i seem not to be the only one who thinks this...i never have claimed to know more then you and i never will, because it dosen't matter, the fact is fish died and we are trying to see why...if you had fish die and people told you to bad, i am sorry to hear that, but that gives you no right to come at me with an attitude when my fish died and some people are wanting to see why...obvously from me having large knives and a good size aro and big cats i am not a begginer as well..so have fun in the kiddy pool and when you grow up maybe you can be helpful...and I DON'T CARE what you think about me...if thats what it takes for you to sleep at night talk all the s#$% you want...

i was worried about that also...i already had the tank crash...it was just to help the filters catch up and stay caught up until my fx5 gets here...maybe i was to carefull?

umm you can always dump the old water from ur canister into the fx5 and mix it with RO(reverse osmosis).. im planning on swap from rena xp3 to a fx5 asap when i have time and room. but im just mix the old canister filter water with RO and hope everything goes well.. you planning on gettin new fish?
