What the heck?!?!?! (pics included)

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Whats the point of having MFK if every time someone asked a question they get flamed.... I guess we should just be as perfect as you n no one will have to use MFK.....

Sadly this happens all too often, and the person with the snarky response rarely bothers to read the entire thread to see if the issue has already been resolved either. And don't feel bad about doing the test wrong, I wasn't shaking my bottles for a long time, and when I learned what I needed to do I thought I always had very high nitrates. After I did a side by side comparison with a different test kit then I realized that my reading were always about 30% higher than they really were.

Didn't flame you at all. But the fact you didn't know what a cycled tank should be like tells me you are inexperienced. It is a shame you will probably listen to the other guys who are making you freak out about nitrates and telling you that you must do waterchanges like every 2 days. Tons of people on this site do not know about water chemistry and resilience of fish. They were taught to freak out over 40 ppm of nitrates and they teach others the same. Take advice form people who have experience/knowledge about something rather than those who act like experts, who only read crap off google.

Snarky remark? Regardess of whether he did the test wrong or not, he claimed " should I have nitrates". Which indicates his inexperience. And I did read the entire thread. I am not trying to make him feel bad about anything, rather trying to educate him and what is sad is people miss that point in my posts.

It may sound like I am being a smart--- but what I am tired of is people saying things they have no knowledge or experience with. I never ever speak up about something unless I know about it personally. When someone asks about a fish, if I have no experience with it I don't comment. But too many people on this site wanna act like experts, they go to google read up on a fish then come back to a thread and post what they read as if they have experience or knowledge. OP just warning you to be careful with people on this site cause this is what a lot of them do.

There is a big misconception about nitrates and most people think 40 ppm is something to freak out about. But most of these people do not know themselves for sure, they only learned that when they got into fish. I may be in the minority with these beliefs but I will bet everything I have that fish can survive in much higher nitrates for awhile. Fish can even survive with little amounts of ammonia and nitrites. But not large amounts. What kills fish is big swings in temps, PH, and nitrates. And the only reason big nitrate swings happen is people are overstocked, under filtered and/or overfeed.

And for these people that disagree, when is the last time you lost a fish or how many fish have you lost to nitrates? I bet not many. Most fish die from improper stocking or owner mistakes. I have never ever lost a fish to nitrates. My tanks are stable and I do not worry one bit about nitrates and I only do waterchanges once in while, like every month maybe sometimes less frequent. I don't even test for it, cause I am that confident there is nothing to worry about.

We all know nitrates cause fish STRESS and when developing a fish that has low nitrates good diet and space is going to be a brute when he gets older, this is why ray and discus tanks have DRIP SYSTEMS to keep their nitrates LOW! YES 40PPM nitrates wont kill a fish or barely harm him but why not keep it low? It will only benefit this fish, ime my fish seem more active w/ lower nitrates and more healthy, 80ppm and above needs to be addressed imo but i agree that alot of people freak out about any idle amount little do they know if you didnt have nitrates ud have nitrites or ammonia which WILL kill a fish!

Personally i like to keep mine 20-30ppm but thats just my preferance!

And fyi thats why your water co cant exceed 10ppm nitrates (my water co) or its a huge fine, if they dont want nitrates in ur tap what makes you think ur fish can tolerate it better then humans?? I think its a healthy practice to keep nitrates low because it encourages wc and a cleaner overall tank and habbitat for your fish!
