What the heck?!?!?! (pics included)

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
A 25% wc every 2 weeks is only 50% wc per month, thats a low amount. Atleast do 25%/week or better yet 50%/ week. I do 50% every 3-4 days and my nitrates spike at 40ppm.

Be sure to add proper amount of dechlor and seachem prime works better then stress coat imo!

#1 S. Vettel

bigger water change and clean your filters out more often

I agree with what F1 VET and NCStateFisher said.

Thanks for the help i will post the new test results later today n let ya know if the water has cleared up.....

your tank is not fully cycled, when u see ammonia and nitrite 0, with nitrate going up, then it means your tank is cycled. stop doing water change till then

I hardly ever have nitrates in an established tank, in fact when I do tests on a spectrometer in the lab, I get 0-2 ppm, which could be considered "noise".
But I also have planted sumps.
I do not worry about not having nitrates, I only worry if they are high.

And for the people saying their nitrates spike every few days and they do waterchanges frequent that is due to you being overstocked, underfiltered, and/or you also probably overfeed. Learn to balance this better and you do not need to do waterchanges every 2-3 days. It is just sad to see the OP doesn't know much about fishkeeping and he is keeping fish that are not suitable for beginners.

You probably did the test wrong or you did the test too soon. I would be better to check the nitrates before doing a water change, then you will see if a waterchange is even necessary. The fact you get no nitrate reading now suggest your tank is not cycled or you did it too soon. So taking the test before will tell you not only that your tank is cycled or not, but also whether it is necessary to do a water change in the first place.

If you have a reading beforehand, do the waterchange, then take the test again you have something to compare to. Then you will actually have peace of mind rather than being freaked out by people on this site who make it out that 40 ppm of nitrate is a cause to have a heart attack.

Umm thanks for the info but i do know about my fish and also about fish keeping i just wanted to get someone else opinion and if u read the thread the proper way u would see i did take the test wrong..... But figured out what i did wrong n now i m good to go.... I probably am overstocked but i take good care of my fish.....
I think its funny how over some little question someone always has to assume i don't know what i am doing....
Whats the point of having MFK if every time someone asked a question they get flamed.... I guess we should just be as perfect as you n no one will have to use MFK.....
