what the hell is wrong w/ my gar

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
well i cant do anything rit now cuz im back at college and i dont have another tank to seperate. i tried pushing the hump down and bringin the back up but it didnt do much.

So its probably a broken back. But it could be a tumor pushing on stuff but that would be more gradual.

I remember we had a gar at work do that all of a sudden couldn't figure it out and couldn't help it so we had to put it down. We get tranqualizers and just OD them so they go to sleep before they die. Works better then freezing.

Come to think of it my firend i work with said that is a symptom of fish TB wich can be passed on to humans. But i serously doubt that. You have to practically lick a sick fish to get it and the chances of your fich getting that specific strain are like you getting attacked by a shark.

what kind of gar is this
?

Dont kill it... it still can survive and probably heal back tho not totally. From what i have read, gars with broken backs are pretty common due to injuries from jumping or hitting the tank sides. Most of the gars either recover or remain like that and continue to be healthy fishes till old age. Just continue feeding it and it should be alright in a couple of weeks time. However if it doesnt eat and begins to sulk, then by all means put it out of its misery. The gar may not have mobility in its back for a few months but will regain it slowly. The total recovery time should take about 6 months for it to fully regain function in its lower back.
