What I don't get is why some people turn them on in the morning. If my water is clear and I can see my fish, then what is the point? Just curious, that's all.
The reason Tcarswell gave is a main one. Also, many people have plants in their tanks.

Also not every ones tanks are lit up with natural sun light. I for one positioned my tanks so this does not happen :)

One of my tanks is in a spot where the sunlight hits it dead-on on one end, and I have a towel draped over that end. I don't like direct sunlight. At different times throughout the day, the sun hits the tank at an angle, which I am ok with, but even then sometimes it bothers me.

If you can see your fish without turning lights on, you obviously have your tank by a window or in a room with the lights on bright enough to see your fish. Im guessing people turn the lights on in the morning to SEE their fish.

18 watts of flourscent lighting from 6am - 5pm
128 watts of flourscent lighting from 5pm - 7:30pm
18 watts of flourscent lighting from 7:30pm - 9pm
LED moonlighting (variable settings) from 9pm - 6am

All run by a Zilla dual timer.

In order to be able to set up another tank in my room, I have agreed to adjust my lighting schedule (power bill). I will use natural light (sun light, light from room) until 4:00 pm, then I will switch on the light until 10:00-10:30 pm. I use to switch them on at anywhere from 8:00 - 11:00 am, and turn them off at 10:00 - 10:30 pm.

Both of my tanks right now get a fair amount of light from the windows in my room and hallway. The tank in my hallway is planted, and is lit up by sunlight during the day (I use to drape a towel over the end of the tank to avoid this), so the plants growth will not be hindered.
