you might want to breed other things other than fish alone.. maybe snakes/lizards, those can fetch high bucks

or create large indoor ponds in the basement and start importing Arapima Gigas (like that guy in Amazone got these Ara Farm) and introduce it as commerical fish to your local markets and maybe stick a few high end king arowana in it

You gotta consider breeding fish is not a necessarity in life.. so you wont have a fix income unless you can sell a large quantity

THINK ABOUT IT! If this was so easy.. (under $5000 to set up/work less than 3 hrs a day/make at least $1500 a month) we wouldve done it already, but then again.. if all of us did it.. Crazy competition xD and in the end it wouldnt work at all xD

Reptiles never make money. Everyone always make profit at a loss or break even. The ones that do make money are the ones with a collection in excess of a thousand breeding specimen.

How much you can make also can depend somewhat on your location.Still $1,500 is probably a bit much unless you've got a lot of money to risk in the first place, and are with the understanding that it will be just that,a risk.

I live in BFE my town's population is almost 100,000 and the nearest cities to us are 200 miles in each direction.

I don't know how else to describe it other than being a retirement town, the people have more money than they know what to do with and are to lazy to look on the internet for what they want. (others are simply distrustful of the internet and some may not know it exists)

The 2 LFS can hardly keep stock in,any time something cool comes in it's gone with a quickness, usually that day because of how many people come in on shipment day and sit like vultures waiting for the boxes to be opened.

Theres a guy in town who breeds African Cichlids, mostly peacocks, and I know he makes a fair amount of money each month because everybody goes to him for cichlids....the LFS can't really compete with him because he's been doing it for long enough that he's got a bit of a rep.

He just does that on the side though, if it all fell through tomorrow he wouldn't be without income.I think thats the only way to go... if you don't have a huge amount of money you can set aside to risk on a fish business than at the very least make darn sure it's not your only source of income.Have a fall back plan.

If I was going to do something along those lines I would get solar power, which will eventually pay for itself, and probably a large a greenhouse as I could afford to construct....but I live in a state with a reasonably mild climate.

Greenhouses can stay pretty warm inside even when it's pretty cold outside, and if it did get a bit chilly inside you could use the solar generated power to heat the greenhouse, which won't take much.

That would take care of your heating, possibly your lighting if you set it up right. You would probably want to make sure you were out of city limits as not having to dechlor your water would probably save lots as well.

Still all these shavings of cost still may not put you in the position where your putting $1,500 a month in your pocket. :nilly:

1)Where is BFE? BFE stands for?

2)What state your in?

3)solar panel will cost a lot, its not even worth to install it in the first place, the money u put in the panel, it will cost more than the energy u pay from the plug ^^

If your lfs and the breeder guy that breed cichlid can make quick money. Imagine the possibility, if we introduce exotic species and such.. Gonna make a bundle and put that guy and the lfs out of business ^^

i think you can still make money, cuz there some breeder here in Canada, can actually sell different morph of python and making it as their career.. i think you can actually do it.. but not at a fix income

I already have solar panels,Inverter, Batteries the works.Quite the money saver, esp here in Cali.I have saved many times over the money I put into the solar panels in just the last few years and I'm not even using them as my main source of power, just to take care of a few side projects I have going.

Umm I don't know about putting them out of business... theres a much higher demand for African Cichlids than there are say,Datnoids and Flowerhorns, and AC's are much easier to breed.Could make some money though if you were careful was the point that got lost.:D

You can make money breeding if you have a LFS of your own or you have a reliable market to sell to all the time. You must have enough stock to send out weekly or biweekly fish lists. Just remember that the summer will be slow and before Christmas may slow down too after Christmas is up in the air since you will not know what people got for Christmas.

We would all like to make alot of money for very little investment and few work hours but in this day and age it is just unrealistic. If you want to get rich then you have to bust your ass. Dont feel like working that hard? Find something you love. Id like to eventually get in to the pond business and hopefully pond construction/maintenance and maybe selling/raising fish will make enough money that I wont have to eat dogfood when I retire. until then fish are my hobby

im setting up a breeding program for some extra cash, its going to consist of piranhas witch is no problem and stingrays the p's will keep steady with hundreds of babies every few weeks that a few lfs's have told me 2 bux a piece with hundreds of baby p's you could make money. stingrays are in very high demand at the lfs's around me so im going to set up and try to breed them i would have a steady market because i no alot of private lfs's that would buy the fish of of me on a constant basis this is all for fun but i think i might make some money since i would have my market already just need the starting cash:nilly:

might not be in your list but try breeding L46 zebra plecos I bet you you'll hear your wallet go caching if your succesful...but I'm telling you good luck on doing that.

not so much into pleco's but stingrays are my passion followed by piranhas and arowanas and arowanas are not happening :irked:

breed dogs for income, not fish. .

nothing wrong with breeding dogs, but I hate seeing "puppy farms"

I had a 1,600$ parsons russell terrier ***** with champ blood lines, and a 900$ stud of good stock. I only let them breed once per year instead of twice. she would pop out 6-7 little obnoxious crawling, chewing, pooping, tear your house up, escape from pen rodent sized pups.
ALLOT OF WORK and the parsons russell doesnt have the attention span to care greatly for the little things. you have to do it.

I didnt get the dogs just to breed them, but they did make me around 2-3K profit once a year. cold have been more profit but adding the expense of vet bills, food and everything the little monsters destroyed it comes out to 2-3K.

but back to fish, I believe its too much hastle for the average aquaryist to breed for profit, id' just try on the small scale first...
