what to cover filter intake with?

i have a large sponge that is supposed to be used as some kind of filter media. it works well. some people just wrap pantie hose around the intake..

I used pantie hoses but there are two problems with them they slow down the flow, and on stronger suction get sucked in. filter floss or a sponge is the best

lol. Does that not reduce the filter intake too much?

I noticed are lare reduction in flow.

Thanks for clearing some of that up. I do suppose that you don't need that much flow for a fry tank though.

I cut a blue filter pad down to about a 4X4 square and rubber banded it over the intake. Working just fine. Suspect it will need to be cleaned often, but at least my fry won't be sucked up.

For tanks with overflows, I put an 800 micron filter media bag on the overflow.

For HOB filters I use Aquaclear foam replacement. Just make a small slice through the middle.

Thats what I use and find it better than the pantie hose.
