I have a multi hundred gallon pond up here in central Ohio that I'm stocking a single channel catfish. I'm not sure how to deal with ice though? I know channel cats are native here and live under ice and in cold water everywhere. Will my pond be ok with ice on it. I've heard people will break little holes in it to put food in and allow oxygen to flow. Any tips or suggestions?

Use a Cattle trough heater to keep a hole open in the ice, in a small pond like that it will not survive if you let it ice over for to long.

You need to keep the surface of the water agitated. If the water is constantly moving, It wont freeze. Out here they sell ice breakers that people tie under their piers so the ice doesn't pull the piles out. The ones they sell for piers won't suffice for your pond but some kind of constant surface agitation will keep it open

I'm not an expert on ponds at all. I believe you need to have atleast a hole to allow gas exchange and what not.. I'm sure breaking it up will work but how often are you gonna go outside and break the ice? in mid winter once it gets really cold I think you would be going out there more often than not.. 20" isn't that deep. I know in upsate Ny that whole thing would freeze during some winters.. You may want to price heaters and if they are in your price range get one.. It will save you the headache of going out all the time breaking it and keeping the ice from getting to thick.. Again I don't have ponds at all, but you would only have to run the heater during the winter..
