Theres more to fish than the bread and butter species. Don't forget all of the little gems.
Cichlids:
A pair of the docile species of Apistogramma, Nannacara anomala, Neolamprologus brevis or multifastiatus (shell dwellers), certain pelvicachromis could work too. I'd be tempted to try a Laetacara pair as well, either curviceps or dorsigera.

Then theres shrimp, snails, gobies, native darters, ummm lots of option.

1) - Grow live food (shrimp, snails, marbled crayfish, etc)
2) - Grow plants for decorations or food
3) - put a mirror on the back, darken the sides, add black gravel and hang plants into it from a screen cover with a lock on it, use one slowly bubbling sponge filter, place it in a quiet dimly lit corner of the room with a sign; "scariest fish you've ever seen; please move slowly."

My girlfriend allways calls dibs on small tanks. She only likes "baby fish" lol. She currently has a 10g with convict fry, and has another set up for a half dozon frontosa fry she's getting this week.

j/k.. do like I have seen in a local shop.. divide it in 2 and put a flowerhorn in each section that can only fit corner to corner.... :/

I got my son a 12 gal and in intend on putting some neolamprologus multifasciatus or some other shell dwellers in there. They have very interesting behaviour, definitely the best fish to occupy a small tank for life IMO
