What to do with snapper

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
If you feel that strongly about him, you should just tough it out and keep him - but then again, he will live for a very long time yet 50+ years or more.

Well in the end it's your choice. You can very well keep the little guy but he will get big eat alot and need alot of care. If you can't do all that than do the right thing and give him to someone that can. Although that might be a little hard I'm sure you can do it.

Oh and if you wanna ship reptiles this might help

Are you able to build him a outdoor pond? That would make him happy and mostly autosuficient. You could keep him outdoors year round:D

If it were me I would keep it...but if you dont I would take it. I never had a snapper yet but this little guy we found at work is cool and im excited about how big it gets. I just built a 300 gal pond for my RES and some koi...I look forward to another big pond for this guy when he gets big.

We'll thanks everyone i'm still not sure what to do yet i do wan't to give him a good home so i can add more tanks to my basement

I am planning an out door pond for a few native fish but I don't think i could put it in there not just becasue it would eat all the fish in there but it couldn't live in there dureing the winter could it it would be either a cement or plastic linned pond so it wouldn't be able to hibernate and it gets cold here so it would frezze over for a while so it wouldn't be able to get air i could keep the pond from frezzeing over but i wouldn't be able to keep the water wurm probably just above frezzing

So i think i may sell it after all if i can't make room for a large indoor pond or tank i have a local friend that may take it but if he doesn't wan't it then its yours NOLAGT

Can you keep more then one common snapper together i all ways thoght they would fight and of course if one was alot bigger then the other it would get eaten but am i wrong

Well technically it would most likely do fine in the wild if it's native where you live. Reptiles aren't like cats and dogs that depend on us for survival. They have it all programed in their brains how to survive. But be that as it may I would still avoid releasing it based on the fact that you could transfer a disease/illness to the wild population. Do your best to find it a home. I'd love to take it if I had the room.

How do you know a snapper would do okay after being raised in captivity.. has there been any scientific tests done to see how they would endure the great out doors.. just curious because you hear so many conflicking statements... i think they would do okay too but just not sure... and would love to hear what experts think..

woundering the same thing

I dont think you could keep one with another...from I gather they end up eating anything in the tank with them. I have another tank I would keep it in...wouldnt want my little guy to get chomped.

Still would enjoy seeing some pics...mine is just so small right now lol
