There are alot of great ideas on this thread but if your looking for a peaceful tank, you could do a small school of lemon tetras and a few otos. Some plants would look nice too.

In a tank that small, you shouldn't. Aggression in a small tank will lead eventually to death.

I have two planted ten gallons..in one i have a male betta and about 30 ghost shrimp (started with 5 but they have been breeding)..in the other i have a male betta and 3 cory cats..one betta (the one with the shrimp) is really mellow and friendly..the betta with the cories is not so friendly but is learning how to play well with others over time...neither are very predatory but still entertaining to watch..especially the baby shrimp which are only a couple millimeters

well post before mentioned going native, native being not too totally aggressive, and i noticed that 2 or 3 of the sunnies on a website they mentioned only grew to 3 or 4 inches. How many 3 or 4 inch fish could i put in the 10 gallon with a darter of some sort?

or is a 3-4 inch fish too big for a 10 gallon?

A pair of bluespots or blackbanded sunnies and a darter a bit longer than they are, should work. You would be approaching max levels for a 10g and with sunnies you can get seasonal aggression issues. here is a pic (by Slaboch) of a blackbanded sunfish (Enneacanthus chaetodon)
