Ok folks, I am back on MFK and gettin back into the hobby!!! I've been gone for some time but I am coming back strong now having finished some college and with a two year old, new employment, life has been hectic! I currently have no set ups but will definitely be setting up my betta operations again and I have a major question. OK it's like this I have a 30 gal that I recently got and I have honestly NO IDEA what to do with it. I am an intermediate hobbyist but I read like a fiend about everything and plan accordingly. The tank has a modified thing in the back that is like a box with a pvc pipe that snakes out the back to a clearish pipe and I have no idea what it was used for. Should i go salt water? Fresh Water? I want maybe one large interesting fish, what is the largest I could go and how many? I know the rule of thumb the 1inch of fish thing, but im really stuck here folks, help me out!

i think u have a overflow box, and you will need a sump.
lets figure out your filtration first , and how much u want to spend, for your stock.

i would buy a 10 gallon, and make a sump. for your filtration.

i wouldnt go saltwater. too much money. it wouldnt be desireable for me bc its only a 29 gallon

As far as spend I dunno really throw some interesting large fish price ranges out there I want something cool and interesting and preferably one or two larges or just a really neat community idea.

depending what you like. I'de look at a pair of the shell dwelling african's from Tangenekia ( I always botch the spelling). sand base, rock work.. deffinately "different" mid-priced around here. small colorful, attractive imo for their personalities even more so. I Did a 37tall with a pair of brichardi that everyone commented on. though they did breed like mice! Those are the more commonly seen if i recall. Otherwise I love my planted 20H have some shrimps, and micro oddballs in it.

personally I would go with a small group of rainbow sharks and some ghost shrimp with lotsa fake plants or planted....they are pretty fish and mine has a great personality...plus the tank would look really cool

I would go with a pair of angelfish and a BN pleco, with 10 zebra danio dithers.
