What turtle can you keep with Sliders?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Yeah many people don't know they can get quiet big in the end. I see wild painted turtles get to around 16 inches in length around here, granted that's a really old turtle, but they also have massive ponds to live in. Atleast with musk's they tend to stay around the size of your hand in most cases.

Most people also don't realize that just because a reptile spends most of its life in the water doesn't mean that it doesn't need to come out and sun bathe everyday to maintain body temp.
Yep, I have 12 turtles and in the summer they spend most of their time on land, basking and roaming around my garden. They only really return to the water at night.

Yeah I know when ever I go out fishing that I almost always see turtles sun bathing on logs, rocks, the bank and even on each other lol. Only see them swimming around during the late afternoon-dusk times or if they get startled.

Yeah he'd atleast want to upgrade to a 300 wide tank. Or possibly build an indoor pond for them.

To be honest, when I went to the reptile shop, they said my sliders would be able to lives their lives in my 20 gallon...:WHOA:

I live in the UK, where it is pretty cold and I don't have any space to build an indoor pond or have a 300 gallon aquarium. Any advice on an outdoor pond ? Are they fine for turtles?

Yeah pet stores really aren't the best source of info, their main priority is the sale. And as for an outdoor pond they should do just fine as long as they have the ability to dig into the bank and hibernate underground. Granted if your uncomfortable with the idea of them being outside all winter long the 100 should do fine as a temp tank during winter. The main thing would be to make certain the turtles cannot leave the yard they would be living in as they would be considered invasive species and be killed outside of your property.

Yes but you will need to wait until May to put it outside.
I have a thread about keeping turtles outside in the UK in the pond section.

I forgot to add, juvenile turtles may struggle with brumation. Make sure your turtle is at least 5 inches and in good health before you try.
Wouldn't be a bad idea to stock in guppies or mosquito fish to help reduce mosquitos and provide a good long term source of food for the turtles.

If I lived somewhere warmer I would but they would not survive the winter in the UK outside.
Mosquito fish might be able to. We have them up here in South Dakota and it can get to -30°F. But as long as the water doesn't freeze completely thru they survive. Usually it's in spots where the water is deeper then 4 feet as we can get 3ft thick ice during winter.

Sick pond dude! Glad to see so many turtles living happy lives; its hard to find good info online about terrapins and long term keeping them.

You've probably helped my dad think about a pond and I am sure these little Gremlins will be happy as well?15812672841999028732382806962424.jpg15812672841999028732382806962424.jpg1581267292596436150068759273725.jpg
