what type is my fh?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Reason, I'm considering selling him is because he doesn't get along with any fish and the only space I'll have for him is a 20g tall soon.
Right now he is in a 120g split with my male vieja fasciatus.
I actually tried breeding my fh one time with the female of the fasciatus pair, but he nearly killed her. I also used to have a golden clown knife that used to fight with him a lot so for awhile he was in a 20g tall and recently my dad moved him back to the 120g because i lost my 19" or so gck along with others. I do have a 75g, but I need to set that up and that'll most likely not happen because I'm away in school most of the year.
So yeah, my tank is looking very plain and my dad is wanting to try different stuff like a community tank of some sort and I know that my fh won't fit in again.

Why are you selling him? He has nice sturdy body, solid fins & big nuchal hump..
Unless you can find a better replacement, you should keep him.. He's a nice specimen..
Btw, what do you feed him?

I feed him mostly Hikari Cichlid Gold and sometimes shrimp without the shell. I used to feed him with the shell, but he keeps spitting out the shell and makes a mess. What are some good foods for color? I have some asian brand of food, forget the name, but it's got two varieties; one's a head booster i think its called and the others like color something... it's pretty popular, but I found it not worth feeding at his size because the pellets are insanely small.

saying that your fh is a midas or red devil

I can 110% guarantee you that it's a fh. It had a really nice flowerline and everything, but after it got injured it just faded this way.

I would keep him. Fading fish are sometimes more sought after than non-faded fish. At least wait until he finishes fading (when the black in his fins is gone) to see what he will look like. Try feeding him color enhancing foods. Something with krill is a good start to bring his reds back.

What's some good food with krill besides frozen dried krill?
I feed it hikari cichlid gold as a staple and shrimp on the occasion.
About that black area, most of his fins were black and the clear white part you see is where his fins were torn up and it healed to that white color. This fh has gone through lots of battles with my other fish esp my clown knife who would own him at nights. I've probably moved him into a hospital tank at least 4x on different occasions. If you look closesly, it still has wounds on its big hump. It become more visible when the water quality gets bad or if the water is too warm. The wound on it's head is from bumping into my overflow box way too often when it gets chased by the clown at night.

Fh are mainly solitary fish.. You should try keeping him alone in his own tank..
If he grows this beautiful in a community tank before, imagine his potential when you put him in his own space.. Just a thought..

i'm going to give it one more try.
i think i might try feeding it nls coloring food or something.
i used to feed it to my very first fh a few years back and had amazing results.
those other other asian brands are too hard to find for me and i still have some of the chingmix from two years ago, but i think it's probably gone bad and plus they're wayy too small.

I think I'm doing it backwards now.. after seeing you feed hikari cichlid gold & got that result, I'm trying back hikari bio gold right now..
I've read a lot on NLS & even used them but I don't see any results..
It's probably the fish but we got to try everything now, don't we.. ;)
