What type of Arowana for 180g

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Unfortunatly they are illegal here in the states, so I don't have much experience with them. Seems they are in the 20-24" range, but I could be mistaken.

They can reach 36", and are less flexible than members of the Osteoglossum genus. Although I'd say 24" is average captive size, it's because they are often kept in smaller than required aquariums. A LFS in my area (Dragon Kings) has some Reds that must be 30" or so, and massively bodied in a (roughly) 10x3x4 tank.

I've seen those too, they're probably around 30" if not more. 180 probably isnt going to cut it for life.

like i said when i move into my new house and have settled in i plan to upgrade to at least a 300 gallon but is that too long? and would a 180 not suffice for 5 years?

Yeah, it'd be fine in a 180 for quite a while. There are several Asian arp importing companies that would ship one to you.

A 180 is a bit cramped, but it's not going to kill a silver or black. Black would be a better choice, as they're slower growing and I find they don't get as large.

but would it be ok for any of the South American varieties for awhile?

5 years would be a stretch for a silver aro, maybe a better chance with a black though.
